Wife had a deaf cat decades ago. Long haired,pure white. Big BLUE eyes too. We learned its pretty common for pure white,blue eyed cats or dogs to be Deaf. That spoiled feline lived to 19. She could read sign language per se and could sense when the refrigerator was opened clear from upstairs on the 2nd floor.

Nobody wanted my Truman. He was on his last day at a high kill shelter. They said he was lame. Had a bad disposition. Truman is 10 years old now. Best dog EVER!! Best friend I've ever had. Took about 6 months for him to cheer up. I love him soooo much! I cannot imagine life without him!

This makes me happy and sad. My husband and I have been together for 19 years. We stole a deaf dog from a family who left her chained to a tree. We got drunk, cut her free, and brought her home. We had her for 14 years. She had fleas, ticks, and 8 parasites. We loved that little girl. She died in early 2020 and a month later my husband had a stroke. He's 55 now and confined to a bed. He looks for her every day. Rest in peace, my sweet girl.

I have a Boston Terrier who was born deaf, we didn't know it at the time that we got him. When we realized he was deaf, my late wife Denise said, "What do we do." Cause we never owned a deaf dog before. I said, "Well we just love him, and we'll figure it out." Cause I knew if we took him back to the breeder, I was afraid that he might be destroyed, and I could not live with that, we needed to be his mom and dad. So Denise was disabled due to an autoimmune illness, so she was with Ollie all day, and through a lot of patience and love, Denise taught Ollie her version of sign language so that could communicate, which was such a beautiful thing to see. She also got so in tune with his barks, she knew what each one meant, "Oh, he's hungry. Oh, he wants out." After a 17.5 year battle with her illness, Denise was called home to be with God in May of 2019. Her death was very hard for me to take, and I still have rough days at times, BUT Ollie is right here with me, and letting me know "Everything is gonna be alright Daddy. You know Mommy is in Heaven watching over us."

I have a deaf dog now. I've taught her some sign language. Enough for her to understand. She use to be terrified of fireworks so that is one good thing about her deafness I enjoy. I still say into her ear everyday how much I love her. I think she knows im saying it, as I've done it for years. Thank you for giving Blu her forever home.

@@kp8381 It's so weird sometimes, because like three years ago she could still hear perfectly fine and now I can stand next to her dog bed with her sleeping in it and call her name and she doesn't budge. She also sometimes 'loses' me inside the house when I move into another room and she then wants to follow but doesn't know where I went. I can literally stand half a meter behind her and say 'Here I am sweetie' and she doesn't react. When she's then done staring into the abyss and wants to return to her dog bed, she turns around and gets a little startled that I stand there and then gets super excited and tail waggy and playful that she 'found' me. She's just adorable ❤️ Naaww thanks 😊 And thank you for taking such a good care of your pup.

Yep, I've PTSD from surviving cruel stuffs since I was a baby. My dogs I've outlived all seemed to just know when I needed their love, cuddling, licks or just lay by my side or in my lap. Animals are the best creatures ever. Even my late rescue parrot was attentive. All were very protective ❤❤❤❤.

I’ve noticed that quite often animals that are deaf are often white. My Maltese was white as all Maltese are, but she was born deaf. She was so smart that I trained her to go into a litter box within one week. Also had a white cat that was deaf. I’m wondering if it’s the breeding or interbreeding or what.

My husband and I have had two dogs who lost their hearing. It was gradual but they ended up with no hearing at all. These pups adapted beautifully. They learned to read signs, and hand signals. They responded to vibrations and touch. They both lived out their remaining years happy, healthy , and able to live their best lives.

Wonderful story. I’m so happy that Blu has the best 2 dads in the world. Deaf animals do things differently fr hearing ones. I’m on my 6th all white cat. She has a left blue eye n right green eye. She is also the smartest deaf cat I’ve ever owned, able to read 7 hand signals n does tricks n loves enrichment games n puzzles. She was a “FREE Cat” on Craigslist (NEVER GIVE ANY ANIMAL AWAY FOR FREE ON CRAIGSLIST take them to the ASPCA or a no-kill shelter , not the IN-humane society!!)

I was once incarcerated for a while. During this time I didnt wear my glasses as I should. My mind had to work so much harder that once I began wearing contact or glasses I realized that as a side effect of that poor decision to not wear glasses properly I developed like hyperactive type thought process. This is sooooo awesome! I know how hard having a deaf dog is specially a pit bull, Ive had one and he was just so special. These people are so great for doing what they do, I wish them a wondeful life as a family!

So sweet that they specifically looked for a deaf dog. I also really liked when one of the fellas said, "She just wants to be near you, but she doesn't always want to be touched". So important for humans to understand that about their animal friends.

I adopted a dog who had been returned to the shelter several times. At first he would shake and throw up during car rides because he associated them with being returned to the shelter... I started slow and took him for short rides around the neighboorhood and always gave him treats and praise afterwards. The rides got longer ans he got better and came to love them as well. He was with me for 13 years before he passed. I felt proud that he came to really enjoy something that used to scare him so badly that he threw up everywhere, and that I could be the one to rebuild that for him. He's still with me, albeit in an urn, and I still love him dearly.

I think that says so much about animals' complex intelligence, both cerebral & emotional! It really gives the lie to people who say that dogs & cats don't feel things in the way that humans can, and that makes the way many are abused even more tragic. I'm really glad you and your boy were able to work through his fear of abandonment & give him something extra to enjoy in his life!

@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 ive had dogs and cats my whole life and ive worked at shelters and dog daycares and anyone who thinks animals dont suffer the same emotions as people are completely ignorant to the truth. That or they have an ego problem and arent smart enough to comprend that other species are capable of complex thought and emotion even though thats exactly what they lack. Projection I guess lol. I dont mean to be nasty about it, but after two decades of being in the industry and four decades as an owner, ive experienced these people, and its simply the truth. Often times people think they dont suffer as badly as people do because animals tend to heal faster than people, but that is the main difference, not the ability to feel emotions and pain, but the ability and willingness to heal from them...they feel fear, lonlieness, abandonment, anxiety and depression juat as much as any person, but their ability to heal from those emotions tends to be faster than people so people mistake that for lack of emotion when that is dead wrong. But just like a person, an animal wont always heal and can develop bad and potentially dangerous behavorial issues if left untreated. And not every animal forgets and/or heals 100%, some animals carry the burden of their abuse for the rest of their lives just like a person would and come to require permanent, special living conditions because of the emotional and psychological scars left over from the abuse. Not being able to be in a house with children, having to be in a monotonous and quiet environment, needing medication for left-over anxiety issues, having to be an only pet, having terrible separation anxiety. These can all be permanent results of being abused and its certainly not an exhaustive list. Animals have the capacity to suffer just as much as people do. Anyone who thinks any differently is, like I said, either ignorant to the facts, or theyre just a complete A-hole, but those are the only two options for thinking that lol 😊

@@loribernardisunwell9663 Oof, I can just imagine some of the challenging attitudes you must have encountered doing that kind of work... 😣 Do you think that kids lacking any close exposure to animals in childhood may contribute to this weird misconception of animals aren't fully sentient/sensitive? (In some households of course there'll be actual abuse being modeled, but I'm thinking of the more general ignorance on this one....?) Or is it just down to attitudes being taught by parents & society? I do find it absolutely amazing how successfully most animals can recover from abandonment, abuse etc, if given patience & love by fosterers and adopters? Some will have ongoing issues of course, but many seem so willing to trust again if proven safe to do so, and show the most remarkable resilience despite hellish starts.... It's humbling & heart-wrenching to watch!

When you said she was terrified on her first car ride to the beach, it brought back memories of my Marley, when i got him, he was 4 months, and it was his 3rd home already. I would take him for walks, and he hated to leave the yard, fighting all the way, and running back to the yard, now, 10 years later, he runs to get OUT of the yard, and have to drag him back.
