Calculating hub angles can at first seem daunting but there is a really simple way to find out the bend angles for any dome in of frequency.

anyone else build themselves a small dome using STARPLATES ? :-) Like I did in '80, outside of Tallahassee, FL. WOW...was it ever strong!! Used cross-ripped 4'x8' plywood as the "triangles", which set the geometry. About 12'+ high. Cool "love pad" for this long-ago architecture student. Heyyy...know what?...if one laid flat in the floor's center, the acoustics seemed to echo one's heartbeat!!!! Test it yourself, and reply! Ahhhh...to be young, again ! :-) GREAT work on this channel, sir!!

The wood screws wouldn't be much of a problem. I'd maybe just score the bend line, cut the struts with a 12 degree bevel, line up the outside of the strut with the bend line, secure the screws and bend the bracket as needed to make the lofted pentagon or hexagon, then add another plate to the interior. The accuracy of the build will depend on setting the screws properly and getting the strut length exact and consistent. Another design might be to make the legs of the plate long enough to be able to fold up sides that would look like a joist hangar for stairs or rafters, maybe even modular to account for 5 and 6 struts as well as the base joints that need 4. Do the hangar style interior and then add a plate to the exterior.

Mount one on the outside and THEN one on the inside on every joint. Don’t worry about the bend angle, it will basically work itself out.

I would mount them inside not on the outside because the exterior is in tension,the interior is not and thats why a dome its hard to break from exterior but easy from interior.Also,the screws are really bad especially on this design with double struts.I mount the metal on the inside and i use kevlar string and and bicomponent ressin to attach the hubs(no screws).

Can you explain this a little further please, or direct me to more information? Also, maybe I missed it in the video, but what size gauge would you need for a 15 foot diameter build?

Can you use 16 gauge for a 30'?
@jravak487
@jravak487 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry if I missed this info in the video, but what gauge steel do you use? Could you just screw in the beams and then while assembling just use the beams to bend it into shape? Will it still maintain its strength?

Yes you could, on a small dome this would work fine just be careful if you go 6m or over, you could also build a small test dome as well. Laser cutting the correct star shape will be where the money is.

in the USA are these typically buildt with two 2x4's or 2x6"? Either one is 3" wide. So can I just draw a hexagon with 2" sides to get these laser cut metal pieces? or is more complicated than that?

why not just 3 straps with a locating center hole, and a cone drilled thru with square cut 90° members then bolt the interior plate thru the cone to the 3 pieces of exterior strap. kiss

bend them all to 12 degrees since that is the most prevalent angle, less work that way. because you bend less

My concern here is the the wood connecting points are only as strong as the connectors which apparently comes down to 2 brittle woods screws.

All you need to do is use a little common sense , Yes I agree with you about this method being to light duty for my needs as well but remember he is only talking about 10 ' to 15' diameter domes I am planning to build a 35 to 45 foot dome with 4 foot riser walls and a full basement ! so My hubs will be 2 piece an inside and an outside built to nicely fit either 2x4 or 2x6 boards drilled with say 1/2 inch holes in the wood and the hub at matching distances 2 holes at each end of board then correct length of bolt and lock washer and nut . my building method will only be using this wood dome frame as a temporary mounting structure for holding in place pre cast cement triangles with a mesh center that is 2 inches larger on all sides than the actual triangle once a row of the cement triangles has been mounted it will be a simple method of overlapping one 2inch mesh flap over lumber then a spraying the correct bonding agent over seam and sides of triangle to be joined then a layer of cement then the other mesh overhang from triangle beside placed over first layer of concrete then another finishing layer of cement to meet the same height of triangles Once all outside seams have been cemented in place and allowed to cure , it is time to remove nuts and bolts and lumber from inside dome and cement in the joint from the inside simple as that ! this will be a bug proof , typhoon proof , fire proof and even earth quake proof sancturary and the bonus to this method besides its life span being measured in centuries the hubs and lumber can be used to construct another and another Dome Home :):):) if you want a smaller or larger home you simply cut the required lengths of another set of boards ! I will decide on type of wood when the time comes pressure treated wood be ideal to extend the life time and number of domes that lumber could actually build befor breaking down or a number 2 or better grade of spruce or pine and make up a oil bath to soak lumber in an oil that id cement friendly perhaps linseed oil ? mineral oil ? what ever the research tells me to use I can see a construction company adopting this method to build communities of Dome hpmes or even for the do it your selfers to just rent the hubs and lumber frame this is the building of the future being 40% more efficient at heating or cooling plus the most amount of space with the least amont of material It has already grown a lot over the last 10 - 15 years it took us dumb humans a few hundred years to figure out that what the ancients built IE Romans and even the Eskimos got it right so long ago we finally found out they were dead on just took us a long long time Ha Ha Ha
