I played against him a charity match (I was a pretty useful club player). I was at the non-striker's end when the batsman on strike (a retired county left hander) flicked the ball off his toes about 5m to the right of Randall at mid wicket and called for a run. Randall moved to his right, picked up in one hand, and hit middle stump at the bowler's end with my partner 3m short. I could not believe that anyone could field like that. He was amazing.

@Flaturtha the Numidian Captains usually bowled their '6th bowler' early knowing that the batsmen wouldn't be taking any risks early on. The great Lancashire one day team of the early 70's used Barry Wood in much the same way. @@JP1234815 Alderman too was a part of that tour, but he returned in 1987 to be a part of the Australian team that won the ashes. The first One Day Cricket international was in 1971 on the 5th of January at Melbourne Cricket ground between Australia and England. This game was only eight years later. The one day international game was in its infancy. Although you could argue that the first World Cup final at Lords in 1975 was the finest.
@Wally-H6 жыл бұрын
No, that's still a bit slow for the time. In a 60 over match teams would look to get to 100 around 30 and no later than 35 overs. The lack of fielding restrictions meant the fielding side could put plenty of men out to save boundaries - that was the real issue. It certainly made it too risky for batsmen to try and hit over the top as the outer 'ring' would have most of the boundary covered.

Yes, but no field restrictions (sometimes you'd see 9 men on the boundary!!), wides were the same as in test match cricket, no fancy shots (just the cross batted slog at the end of the innings), no free hits to artificially inflate the score. The '6th' bowler would usually come on quite early knowing that batsmen wouldn't be taking too many risks. This is why it's quite surprising to see Boycott bowl so late in the innings.

Craig McDermott was fast but raw and the two real class acts Alan Border and Kepler Wessels underachieved, particularly the latter. And Wayne Phillips played every Test innings like it was the last over of a twenty /twenty slogfest.
