Pretty sure he meant to be “pitchy” on the run at the end on purpose. It’s a style that fits very well for the type of song
@michaelcallan5336

Exactly, it's stylistically country. As a country singer myself its just a thing we do, it was popular in country music from the 90's and earlier.

There really isnt a reason to be pitchy. It's not stylization it's just bad technique. As I recall the original which is still country, Tennessee Ernie Ford didn't go off pitch. And then I think of country singers like Reba McEntire and George Strait and many other heavy country singers who do all kinds of runs in pitch.

Geoff is type of singer that when bass or baritone singers practise for years and years , when they hear Geoff they be like ''Fck it , I am nothing''

In all seriousness though, it's all about technique. Geoff's voice isn't actually among the lowest, but his techniques to synthesize notes in the first octave and his experience using therein make him a unique singer. To be fair, basses, when given the time and guidance (*which Geoff so kindly provides on his channel), can indeed practice and replicate his sound quality, tone, and notes. It takes a natural bass/baritone voice and practice to do what Geoff does.

He's confirmed there's no subharmonics or anything in this, that's just his low chest... he has a very low chest voice, down to F#1 on some days and he said on a premiere chat not too long ago that the lowest chest note he ever hit was F1.
@mrvampire2292
@mrvampire2292 3 жыл бұрын
I wonder how common it is to have a lowest chest note that you've only hit once and can't get near again after that
@patrickpredella
@patrickpredella 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... weird, cause the lower notes are accompanied by the usual overtones that you'd hear with a subharmonic register... In which interview did you find this info?
@tex6924
@tex6924 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrvampire2292 VERY common. Most people hit their lowest chest notes in the morning after a night of intense vocal working; this causes the voice to drop, creating "morning voice." It goes to different depths every time you get morning voice, so it's almost impossible sometimes for some people to recreate some low notes. I've only ever done a B1 chest once ever, and I've never been able to chest below C#2 with morning voice since. However, I'll probably get it in my range later in life since I'm still going through the tail end of first puberty.
@mrvampire2292
@mrvampire2292 3 жыл бұрын
@@tex6924 well I understand the thing about morning voice, the things that have me confused is when it happened to me it wasn't morning voice and it's so much deeper that my typical lowest note, I was in front of a vocal coach in the middle of the day and my voice randomly slipped and I got to a G1 they said, now typically I only can get C2 to come out strong so....yeah, idk what happened
@tex6924
@tex6924 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrvampire2292 perhaps you found your fried chest on accident and can't replicate it? Fluctuations are common, but that drastic must be a register change. Chest-fry mix is usually detectable, but "fried chest" is a form of chest-fry that resonates in the chest and sounds nearly indistinguishable from chest voice. It's hard to train to do and sought after. However, like all techniques, it can be accessed accidentally.
@lenzj8968

I've commented on a few of your videos and was wondering a few things. Would you state at some point in your reactions what questions you would ask the performers if you were one on one with them? Like, what technical things are they doing to produce the notes, the runs, etc. You always mention your appreciation for what they do, but a little segment of 'What I'd ask them' would be a cool little addition. For example, what process is Geoff doing to produce a certain note or how he gets them? WHat is he doing wiht the note?

Maggie all I can tell you is that you're going to need to strap up the seat belt, when you listen to the new version of Ain't No Sunshine originally done, by Bill Withers. Now being done as a cover by Geoff Castellucci... He's taking no prisoners

Tennessee Ernie Ford that you reacted to is the original. It was a massive massive hit when Tennessee released it. Tennessee Ernie Ford was a famous singer and tv show host. Tennessee Ernie Ford was on three episodes of the classic I Love Lucy

Just for info - I love when a person who has a bass voice can sing soprano. Back in the 1970's I heard Jim Neighbors sing this live. You load 16 tons and what do you get? (in opera voice) A hernier (in Gomer Pyle voice.) I remember in the TV show Gomer Pyle, Sarge was having a nightmare. Gomer Pyle was singing in this big opera voice (yes it was really him doing it, not some other actor or singer.) I forget exactly, but I think it was a wedding scene.

Wonderful! Wonderful! I still have to go to bat for my boy Jonathan Young. I think you'll be blown away by him. I really think you need to do his Sound of Silence cover since you've done other covers of that song. Still, he recently did an original song called Land of the Living, which I really enjoyed as well. He's actually just committed to taking on a new focus on original music, rather than just the clickbait covers he's largely done until now.

The back story to the purpose of the song, in the late 1800's early 1900's Mining towns popping up in Appalachia didn't always pay their employee's in US dollars. They were paid with company credits called Scrip. Scrip was used in the company Store to buy supplies, clothing, housing, food etc. The grift happens that miners Scrip wasn't directly transferable to US Dollars. Merchants would transfer scrip to dollars but at a varying discounts. Miners that couldn't cover everything would then get a loan for more scrip that they would have to pay back. This indebted them to the company. This practice was eventually outlawed by the 1950's.

If you want to hear him actually hit F#1 in his chest, he does that in voiceplay's Superstitious cover Ah, and if you want to hear another really low voice I really recommend to give a listen to Eric Hollaway (also sixteen tons cover, lowest note is low E flat, I think) as well as Ivan Rebroff (Im tiefen keller, F#1)

Yooo, I'm French native and I just realized because of you that that opera song is in French! Haha! Totally different style, but if you haven't already, you should react to Shawn James, he's amazing--start with Through the Valley and then do it all up to Muerte Mi Amor! ;)

This song as you may well know is the song is about the early years of coal mining. These people were basically slaves. I was born and raised in West Virginia. As you may already know - West Virginia is a BIG coal mining state. Still big business here... I met a man years ago, who grew up in a coal town in Barbour County. They lived in company houses and they got paid in script. Script was money the coal company came up with. It did not spend anywhere other than at the company store. The man mentioned above told me his dad worked for one year and ended up owing the company $60.00. Keep in mine that a dollar back then was a lot of money...

Since you said you sang all different parts, you should check out Peter Hollins. A Cappella singer who does all the parts. Check out Misty Mountains (the one NOT ft Tim Foust first, then watch with Tim for that added bass) what Peter does is sooooo cool!

Hey, if you gotta sing, you gotta sing! I loved your riffing over his credits outro. Thank you, Maggie, for another wonderful reaction and analysis. Geoff even has a subharmonic tutorial on his KZbin channel, in case you want to give it a go. There are a couple of things I'd love to see your reaction to : Blackbriar - Arms of the Ocean (acoustic live) Alissa White-Gluz - Swan Lake (she sings an excerpt from The Dying Swan in her whistle register, but she's more widely known for her gruff vocal-fry voice as the vocalist of Arch Enemy).
