Reminds me of the time I withdrew £100 from the ATM at a supermarket and a friend shouted hi and I walked away leaving the cash hanging out the machine. It wasn't until I went to pay for my shopping I realised I had no cash. I immediately notified a member of staff who promptly informed the manager who went to check the CCTV from the ATM. I did assume the machine took the money back but no. A woman who was standing behind me took the cash and instead of shouting me, she put it in her pocket. Lucky for me she decided to do a shop and was stopped at the checkout by the manager who asked about the money and without even looking at him she just put her hand in her pocket and handed him the cash back. So CCTV can work for you as it did me. Looking forward to the out come.

The shops will not share the CCTV footage with you because they will claim that they are prevented from doing so by the UK GDPR Regulations, i.e. they cannot share personal information about a data subject (the criminal) with anyone else, i.e. you (the crime victim) or the police (the prosecuting authority). The police will not get involved because £5 is too little to be considered harmful - so the police expect you to either be insured against the loss or to 'suck it up' - the police are not there to protect us for anything other than risk to life these days. My 82 year old mum got her purse pick-pocketed in Sainsburys last year. CCTV cameras were everywhere. Sainsburys would not share the CCTV footage, claiming that they were prevented by UK GDPR Regs, despite our barrister requesting a copy of the footage to be captured from the CCTV system. I think the Sainsburys store manager gave my mum shopping vouchers to partly cover to £100+ cash that stolen from her. The police would not get involved and dragged their feet until the CCTV footage was overwritten, instead of getting a copy straight away and commencing an investigation themselves. Sainsburys store manager did retain a copy of the incident but would not share it. If the shop and the police decline to cooperate with you in attempting to identify and apprehend the criminal, then the steps you can follow are: 1. Make a formal Subject Access Request under UK GDPR Regs to the shop for the CCTV footage that shows you using your card in their shop and of your bank card being stolen. 2. Report the theft of your bank card to the police. If neither the shop nor the police want to get involved then: 3. Raise a complaint to the shop, following their Complaints Handling Process. 4. Raise a complaint to the police, following their Complaints Handling Process. 5. Get legal advice as to what you can do to track down the criminal, e.g. from Citizens Advice Bureau using their online form, as trying to get through to the CAB by phone is nearly impossible. In the most part you should be 'insured' against the unauthorised use of your bank card and your subsequent financial loss by the bank as the bank is responsible for ensuring that their processes and systems are secure. Hence, this is why the police may not want to get involved, as ultimately there should be no loss to you. However, there will be a loss to the wider financial system and we the public in general through higher banking costs. Also, not trying to apprehend the criminals just emboldens them to continue committing crimes. If the criminals are going to cause friction in our lives, and the authorities are not going to protect us from them, then we need to cause friction in the authorities' lives until they jump to action.
@Valyoyoable2 күн бұрын
That is true. The GDPR would block them sharing information with the victim or any other private requester unless it is like Police or a Judge order (not even to barrister unless they had a court order). And only when to be used in a crime investigation. And honestly, due to the low amount of damages (around £100) and considering how much work the police have to do compared to their number, this would not be worth investigating in-depth or taken any harsh action unless the person has a list of previous offences.

Got up the next morning and checked my bank balance which was about £800 the wrong way … a night out I might not have remembered having spent that much, however I did remember it and therefore the alarm bells rang. So, cancelled the card. Had to go into the bank every day to confirm it was a payment I’d made or not. The owner of the cloned card was buying lots of fuel on the Western side of the North Circular in London (quite a distance from where I live), more petrol near Victoria Station, then Tesco on Tottenham Court Road and the cherry on the cake … a debt collection agency multiple times!!!! It turns out the petrol station was skimming everyone’s cards, not a clever move as the banks of course all had card payments from that particular hub of scum and villainy. Quite a chunk of money went, got repaid eventually and a new card. But, it was a pain in the backside and I didn’t get asked to go to court so I could eyeball the scumbags, disappointing.

Thank heavens I live in Guernsey (pop. 80k). At least once a week there's a post on the local FB page of a wallet/purse/glasses/keys found and within an hour, returned. The other thing is in the supermarket, forgotten a purse, and the person behind just pays for the shopping. Really not unusual.

Please do keep us up to date. usually such crimes get ignored. It can be very frustrating when the police don't care. 'Crimes' such as accidentally entering a bus lane get swift punishment.

One of my members of staff found a £20 note in my shop, we checked our cctv and recognised the customer, I put the money aside in our til until she came in next and when she did I gave her back her money, yes it was only £20 but it may have been her last £20 & yes being a small independent shop we could do that and know our customers. If it had been an unknown customer we would've held it for a month before putting it into the air ambulance charity box we have here. Morals cost nothing!

Card crime is nothing new, about thirty years ago, I caught a young girl in my shop trying to buy one hundred cigarettes on a stolen card.

My partner found a card while walking my dog, I phoned the bank and reported it straight away. They informed me that it was still valid and cancelled it. Why anyone would not do what we did astounds me. Hope you do get the chance to ask the little shit why ,

Makes you lose faith in humanity when that occurs. My old mum found a wallet at a bus stop and handed it to me. I looked inside and saw that it belonged to a young squaddie with his army ID, cards and cash. Handed it in immediately at the main police station. On reflection, wish I'd dropped it off at the local Territorial Army centre as I suspect the cops would probably pinch the cash and return the wallet.

My bankcard is linked to my phone. Anything spent on my bankcard comes up on my phone straight away, so I know if someone’s using my account like my daughter using my Amazon account lol 😂 but I use my phone now as you need six digits or your face to use it.

A little tip that might help, depending on your banking app, is to enable or turn on notifications. It can be a little annoying because you'll get a pop up on you phone every time there is a transaction (money in or money out). But if some tow rag does what just happened to you, you'll get an almost instant notification of the transaction, so you'll be able to stop the card there and then.

Hate these contactless cards with a passion. Bank sent me one, rang them up and told them to send me a PIN only card. The operative totally agreed with me that they are dreadful, and she didn't want one either. Produced for bone idle Britain, 'cus it apparently speeds things up, and is less hassle....until THIS ^^^ happens. Found one 12 months ago in an Aldi car park, and self admitting to being a decent honest citizen, took it straight back in and handed it to the manager for safe keeping, whera i COULD have gone in, and bought the weekly shop with it I suppose?

Last time I found a bank card in a supermarket car park I telephoned the phone number on the back and that’s the best thing to do because the card is stopped straight away and the bank can then sort things out from there end, but I was brought up to return anything that I found if possible, I also have found a mobile phone that had been squashed by a car and on my way to the police station it was ringing but I was unable to answer it, so I took it to the police station and a fortnight later I found some car keys with the remote fob on and because they can be expensive I took them into the same police station and handed them in, so while I was there I asked about the phone that I had handed in a couple of weeks ago and they said that they would have destroyed it, but honesty is something that is definitely not everyone’s first thought these days! Cheers Mark!

A friend of mine dropped his wallet with about £500 of cash in it in the pub Wetherspoons, he was sure where he lost so kept pushing the police but they weren’t interest. He managed to get in touch with the pub manager who told him that the police had looked at their CCTV, they know the person who picked the wallet up but they are refusing to take any action. When my mate asked to see the same CCTV images they refused due to public identity legislation. Basically you lost £500.. suck it up. He is now wondering if it was one of the bar staff.

It happens. Have an app on your phone to track transactions and block as soon as it is suspicious. No contactless on card, use phone for this feature. Usually banks are good at returning money back if it is a fraud.
@sib9232 күн бұрын
I learned relatively quick just to cancel the card that way chancers who might find it will not be able to use any further! Plus if you phone your bank and dispute those transactions under Fraud you'll get all that money back...Yeh you will get the money back. I've had this happen before. Much respect Geoff! '

This is why I disable contactless on all my cards. You can do that yourself in some of the mobile banking apps. Plus, by doing this, you remember it more easily when you are prompted to use it, which happens from time to time.

Geoff I really feel for you & I am so very Sorry that you have been a victim of crime. I have experienced this on more than one occasion, unfortunately. I was recently robbed by a "friend" & her cronies for my phone, if she had asked I would have gladly bought her a new phone alas I was robbed & seriously assaulted & apparently I was found on the street by a stranger unconscious & rushed to hospital with a suspected brain bleed. When I came round I was concussed & confused surrounded by the South Yorkshire CID. Fast forward are this will be a book, I was absolutely shocked & heart broke 💔 to realise that someone who I have known all my life could have done this to me for a mobile. I still find it extremely hard to come to terms with 😢 Yes Geoff "Why" 😪 😢

Simple. If you do use a card to make payments, DISABLE CONTACTLESS. It will therefore require a pin number entry.

Doubt the shops will give you the footage due to gdpr. Also, Doubt the bank will refund you as the card was used before you reported it stolen/missing. Don't think the police will be interested as they've bigger criminals to go after, you know, like the driver going 3mph over the limit or someone saying hurty words on twitter.
