Imagine a Gothic cathedral in the middle of the night, completely dark and empty; then your suddenly hear an old clavichord and rusty bells starting to play by themselves and the low nice bass starting to sing out of nowhere. The St.Elmo lights are winking from side to side and this ghostly dark but extremely nice voice is singing and echoed back from the high cathedral ceiling vaults. It's singing the old carol, older than the cathedral itself, older than its bells, equal in age to the oldest of ghosts. The carol is ending in an earthy low note, lower and deeper than its dungeons. This note remains underneath forever, bouncing from the old walls and repeated by all the underchurch inhabitants.

As an English and etymology nerd, the fact that he rhymed "mind" and "wind" in the original Middle English pronunciation just warms my heart. The "Great Vowel Shift" messed up English lyrics, poetry, and Shakespearean dirty jokes. Also, you can see just how much he loves this song, and I don't blame him. This and "Oh Holy Night" are my favorite Christmas songs. What a great arrangement.

@Wayne I am one who has always, ALWAYS preferred the richness of a good bass voice over any of the higher voices. A good bass voice will literally give me the chills and make me shiver. I freaking love it. It's a beautiful, warm, earthy sound that I have always been drawn to, and it always elicits a visceral response from me when I hear it. Yes, there's a safe and comforting quality to it, but for me it's that earthy rumble. Geoff's voice also manages to carry a gentleness in it, even in his lowest sub notes without losing the earthquake rumble. And that is just completely enchanting for me. There's a place and time for the higher voices, too. There is. And I do also enjoy them as well. But for me, nothing quite compares to the velvet wrapped in honey of a good bass. :) I'm a female low contralto, so I sing basically the tenor range (but being female, I don't have that lovely tenor bright AND full timbre). If i had a penny for every time I've been told to force my voice up into the alto range or that I "just can't sing" because my range is inconvenient for what they were doing, I'd have a mansion on a private island somewhere. LOL. I've tried to reach the alto range... I can't. Simply cannot do it without causing injury. Heck, some of the higher tenor range is hard for me to reach! I've had a much easier time coming to accept my voice as it is, since getting into the acapella groups over the last five years or so. Learning that people DO actually appreciate the whole range of voices, including those of us on the bottom ends of our respective voice groups, has gone a long, long way towards reigniting the actual desire to sing again. All this to say... you don't ever need to be ashamed or shy about your bass range. Take what nature endowed you with, care for it, and let it blossom. There is something a bass voice adds to music that no other voice type can. And it's the soul of the music; take the bass line out of anything, and all those higher voices leave you with a piece of music that sounds empty and hollow.

I also really like the backing track, it fits really well, but your voice and harmonies are still the star of the show. It complements really well and adds to the overall end product. Simply marvelous! Happy Holidays to you and yours, Geoff(s)!

It's amazing how you can take a song so old and change it so much, yet leave the listener with the impression that the song was always meant to be this way. Truly not just a great voice, but a talented artist.

Geoff, what a stunning arrangement and performance! I’ve been listening to the King’s Singers, Dale Warland Singers, and Chanticleer since the beginning of Advent this year. Your arrangement brings to mind contemporary classical composers/arrangers such as John Tavener (The Lamb), Stephen Paulus (Evensong), and even the great John Rutter - such beautiful and tight harmonies. The modulation from minor to major at the end was so incredibly joyful and exultant. Thanks so much for your lovely and heartfelt rendition of this traditional carol!

Oh, my heart is pounding! This is awesome! My four favorite Geoffs: tenor, baritone, bass, and basso profundo. Not the song I was expecting to hear, given the wardrobe choice and set decoration, but does indeed bring me comfort and joy. Thank you, Geoff, for another lovely arrangement and performance. What a fabulous birthday and Christmas gift.

Your 16 tons video was my favorite, but honestly I think this one might just pass it up for me. The arrangement is just so... complex but unintrusive. Your composition skills never cease to amaze me, which is incredible considering just how amazed I am every time I see a new video.

Geoff this is a unique and beautiful version of the song; I always love your arrangements. More importantly though, to me, was the fact that so many of your friends & Kathy, of course, were there to help you put it all together. That is what this song and this time of year is all about. With the very recent loss of my Dad I am really struggling this holiday season to find that peace & joy I normally have so I find it truly heartwarming to think of you, Kathy, Eli & the PattyCake Production guys - Layne and/or Tony - working all together. To anyone reading this comment, no matter what holiday you celebrate, I wish you peace & joy this season and to anyone struggling along with me, may you find someone or something to warm your heart & help you through.

This rendition reminds me of my dad. He was a bass singer who loved Christmas songs and air-conducting imaginary orchestras/choirs while he sang along to them, and when this song hits the point where the instrumentation swells in, I can't help smiling and imaging the fun Dad would have had singing and conducting along with Maestro Geoff. :)

They are too busy smiling at this arrangement of yours and the perfect execution of the harmonies, not to mention the too cool rhythmic changes that are going on too. You are a gift from high above. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I am in awe. I love the outfit (perfect) and the wonderful lighting too!

Love everything about this: the voice, the drumming, the bell, the lighting effects in the windows that give an almost holy aspect to the atmosphere... Everything is just perfect! I could see this version being sung in a gothic church with monks entering to go to mass.

Geoff, this is a masterpiece. I’m not saying this because I am following your work for some time and absolutely love it, nor because this amazing piece is among the stuff I listen to lately, but because there is just so much effort in this. Your soothing voice (leading) and the backing vocals, the effects, visuals, harmonies, everything. I am simply speechless. Bravo! Keep up the amazing work, lots of love
