Such a win win win. The cows get fresh grass on a regular basis; you get your swales cleared out and manured! And at the end of it all you get milk and/or grass fed beef and amazing fertility in the water being caught up in your swale system!

Except for the cows who are being exploited and murdered months later...

@@LimitlessVibrations As are the plants we grow in our gardens and on our farms and eat every day. Bless your intent, but you are in denial if you don't yet realize plants are sentient beings too. In Nature everything eats something to live. While many people choose not to consume any animal foods and maintain excellent health, there is no question human beings have evolved for millennia as omnivores. As a naturopathic physician for 20 years, I can tell you that there are absolutely people who fail to thrive and become sickly on a strictly plant based diet, despite their intense desire and commitment to do just that. I am one of those people. We may not need to eat much of it, but our health turns around once we add some animal foods into our diet. We don't fully understand all of the reasons why this is so for some and not so for others, but it's a fact I have encountered many times in my practice as well. Calling omnivores who raise animals (the way Jeff is) and consume meat murderers, is not going to achieve what you're committed to achieving, and it's an act of judgement and aggression that will only alienate people and make them defensive and dismissive of you at best. I applaud your intent to protect and respect animals however. The conditions under which most animals that are raised for consumption (in the US for sure) are utterly unconscionable.

Great stuff, keep em comming! The amount of interactions going on here is insane, I personally love the idea of a nutrient dense soup fertirrigating all the length of the swale. Boy do I miss you guys!

We have high clay soil here on Kniskern Knoll. Our swales have become contour ponds, so we would have to graze water buffalo :) We did have muskrats move into the swale ponds to eat the cattails.

Should you perhaps plant deep rooting annuals on the swale itself, to get some compost corridors into deeper soil?

Only water plants are growing in the swales right now. However the muck at the bottom is incredibly fertile. I do move it to the tops of the mound to fertilize the trees and such. PLus the trees are growing roots to get what water they want.

Interesting last part there how the cows are learning the system. Might give them more of an incentive to graze faster.

I have one question though: will the cows not harden the soil while grazing, which may be counterproductive

Hi Geoff! Great video! How many cows are doing this work? And about the manure, do you do something to avoid flies?
@thechief762

When cattle aren't concentrated till they stomp the ground bare dung beetles will come roll away and bury the manure.

He also has native (and domestic) birds that eat the flies. Wagtails, I think he said.
