Would love to see another walk through Geoff of Zaytuna under the current conditions and how everything is working . Cheers

It's pretty interesting when you can read a landscape and tell its geological, even archaeological history. I went hiking with an archaeologist and he looked over the landscape and knew indigenous people had lived there. "Over there was a pithouse... that's a larger multistory adobe... I'll bet we find burial urns over here", and sure enough, on closer inspection, there were. But he could see it where nothing was left, at least to the untrained eye. Go hiking with a scientist when you can; ecologists, geologists, and archaeologists can read the past in the landscape and tell the story of mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, and human disturbance.

That would be fascinating, would love to experience a hike, etc with a 'trained eye' & see the past. Our property is diverse with undulating hills, creek, with a variety of microclimates. We have some interesting finds which we are not certain what they are, & have tried many places to have someone come out, either too busy, will try in a few mths, & unfortunately, no progress. Thx for your post, was interesting

I have just seen pictures of Lismore on the news and I am shocked! I know that Zaytuna Farm is located in Lismore County. My prayers go out to all people affected by these torrential rains.

Pretty crazy how you made this video RIGHT before the 100 year flood event actually happens! Happy to know you are all safe and amazing to see how your systems have performed even in this crazy event :)

Hi Geoff, I've heard you say systems like chinampas are the most fertile in the world, but isn't soil drainage one of the most important aspects of a bed? How do the roots and soil biology in a chinampa not become waterlogged, if they're planted right at the water table? Is it better to cycle flowing water in such a system, or should it be stagnant? And on that note, do chinampas stink due to all the anaerobic processes? How long can aerobes and fungi stay dormant in the mud at bottom of the channel? Do they continue to live in the ground down there, and are they all connected? If not, could we somehow help them thrive beneath the channels? Also, why are willows used to stabilize chinampas? What other species could be used?

Thank you for the video, it’s very interesting to learn how to read the landscape. I have seen your video on „The Power of Water“, so I assume and hope you are okay right now during the situation in Eastern Australia. 🙏🏼

Hi Geoff, big fan here from Canguçu, Brazil! I have a question: You say that the "Golden rule about making compost is if it lived it can live again" that being said, how I compost acid citrus like, orange, lemon, limes, and onions (not a citrus but also acid). Literally every one that I watch say it can not be done in quantity because of the acidity, I would like to have your take on this. We plan to have a essential oil business, so we gonna have a lot of citrus laying around. If you could coment on composting cooked/steamed organic matter, like leafs, there is any difference? Ps: sorry about the broken English.

Hi, I live in the San Rafael region of the Mendoza province in Argentina. It is very flat here and any slopes that were here has been ploughed almost flat. I was wondering how one would implement swales in such a flat area with the added challenge of only about 200 to 250 mm of rain per year, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just a quick clarification, 100-year flood event doesn't mean it happens every century or just once per century. It's just a name of a flood event that we predict it will happen 10 times in 1000 years - probability of that event happening is 1 % in a year.

Any tips on identifying how often if ever a wash on my land has water in it? A 5 strand fence that runs across it is still in tact after 10+ years. It’s supposed to be a 35ft wide wash

I was curious how Zaytuna would hold up in the recent flood event. Minimal damage? I've seen videos on your district and it was quite devastating elsewhere

Big fan Geoff, I got a question for you: I am trying to start a food forest on the South of Brasil, I started researching about subtropical agriculture, but here in the south of Brasil the clima is more similar to Australia than the north os Brasil. So now I am studying about permaculture, but in both methods I can't find a way on how to deal with ants. They killed every sing tree that I planted last year.

Start your trees in a nursery and transplant when they are older than a year or even more...that should help a bit

Other topic but as things get tight in Europe: how to deal with a nuclear catastrophe? Could permaculture help rebuilding poisoned nature? If yes, how?

Bioremediation and mycoremediation would be my thoughts to start. Growing organically with massive amounts of antioxidant filled berries to try and bind any and all free radicals possible. High fiber from good greens to try and keep the system clear and tons of high quality water to flush. Other than that I’d love to hear more thoughts. Study chernobyl. Which plants rebounded quickest?

None. There are no signs. 100 year event is a statistical term that is being misunderstood.

I feel like you damage your credibility by being soo specific with return period. That's a pity because your core permaculture message is really important. It would have been better to say - 'We can learn to read the landscape and soil profiles. We can see deposits in benches at different level that we believe correspond to different flood events.' I say this as a hydrologist and hydraulic modeller who dabbles in geomorphology.
