fascinating seeing where the coal wagons discharge. Many thanks.

Great Video Geoff, I vaguely remember this trip when i was a kid which would be 50+ years ago, the one thing that hasn't changed is the tunnel, thanks for sharing

Geoff,my father used to work for International Harvester when they had a large assembly plant on Blenheim Road.The railway ran right alongside the plant. When passenger services still used the railway tunnel,I remember my Nana taking us on day trips on the train to Lyttelton and then a launch trip to Diamond Harbour,or the beach at Corsair Bay. That tunnel is an amazing feat when you consider it was all dug by hand.These days it would be a nightmare if a fire was to break out inside it,as I doubt there are any escape/access shafts !! I remember going through the tunnel to catch the overnight ferry to Wellington on a school trip in 1965.I do remember the train from Timaru to Christchurch was still a steam locomotive,but will assume the one to Lyttelton was a diesel ??!! Thanks for posting your videos,they are most welcome and very much enjoyed !! 😊😊

Brilliant!! I enjoyed every minute of that, as I went on the CHCH to Lytt passenger train many times back in the 50's and early 60's , and at 79 that was a great trip down memory lane thanks , shame all the old rail stations have now gone

It’s amazing, judging by the rails still in level crossings, just how many sidings have been removed. Even Lyttelton yard is a far cry from its hey day. Great post! 👍

Fantastic video.l was trying to find some familiar places like old Linwood Locomotive Depot. That’s where I joined NZR in February 1975.

Any relation to Stephen Bell?

No close relative. I remember Steve Bell. There was also Bob Bell not a close relative. Missed all the locomotive staff after transferring to Taumarunui locomotive depot.

@@richardbell9939 Steve's dad Alan was also at Linwood. Steve had 3 brothers, none Bob unless perhaps a cousin.

Brings back old memories I rode the train many times from Lyttelton to the city when I was crew on many ferries and cargo ships that we tide up in port of Lyttelton.Yes 1956 onwards well before the road tunnel was built and just a dream at that time.

Thanks for sharing! That was cool, especially going through the tunnel (4.5 mins). Just curious about the guidelines for drivers sounding the horn. I noticed he did it soon after going through Addington, but not while approaching the crossings without barriers. Can anyone help to educate me? =)

Is there any grade on the lyttleton tunnel?
@BrickNewton6 ай бұрын
I know the road tunnel nearby has a 1 in 38 grade, it is slightly higher than the railway line on the Heathcote side. But would assume it go be similar
