Thank you for your encouragements! Feel free to share with fellow Pinz owners, it is indeed with them in mind that I am producing this series. I also hope that these videos have good entertainment value for viewers who do not own such amazing vehicles. I am happy to share my experience with all. :-) Thanks again.

Hahaha! Well, thank you for saying so. I do like to keep things entertaining, even for those who aren't mechanically inclined. Depending on where you are located, there are some companies out there who might be able to help you source your Pinzgauer. In the UK, there is HaflingerTechnik, who were very helpful. I ordered the technical literature from them, and they had put me in touch with a seller. Sadly though, it was not the one for me. You might also want to look up a forum called "The Portal Hub". Lots of info on there, if you are interested. Anyway, best of luck with your research, and I hope you will have as much fun and excitement as I did, getting to know these amazing vehicles.

Spent most my day with this video playing on the back of the bench whilst I dismantled and then reassembled my starter motor, regretfully with fewer new parts than you had! Still seems to work fine now though. Your video was extremely helpful.

The stock ignition system works very well and never fails with exposure to water = reason why I never install the ignition system with the Chinese made module. The Pinzgauer is made to be extremely durable and dependable. That ignition "upgrade" is counter productive. I have been making my own plug / wire conversions to fit the original shielded distributor cap for over 20 years now without a single failure. Just saying...
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 2 жыл бұрын
I understand your position. It is reversible though, and I keep the original parts on board in case it fails. If the vehicle was still equipped with the original military fitment, I would definitely have left it at that. As it was delivered to me with a cheap, crappy 'pointless' ignition as it were, I just upgraded that to something designed for this engine. Straight away I noticed improvement during starting, and it would no longer stutter when I drove in rain. Honestly, the ignition system as it was when I got it was appalling. If ever I find a set of shielded cap and wires, I will definitely purchase, rebuild the stock distributor and give it a go.
@thilokass3966
@thilokass3966 2 жыл бұрын
@@gmcevoy Your reasons do make sense and the best results I have had with all my and my customers Pinzgauers has been with a stock, fully serviced distributor, the original shielded Military Distributor cap along with my custom plug / wire conversion, using only German made quality parts. The "cheap, crappy 'pointless' ignition" was which brand ? Just wondering. Also as far as I know with the SSI system installed, you cannot get a signal for using an ignition timing strobe light, correct ? I am asking because if that is truly the case then the ignition timing on the Pinzgauer cannot be properly adjusted for specific location (altitude) and / or different fuel quality grades. Looking forward to your response.
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 2 жыл бұрын
@@thilokass3966 The ignition which was fitted to it when I bought it was not branded. No idea what it was, most likely a Lumenition knock-off. Otherwise, I think you can hook up your strobe to the n°1 HT lead and get your reading as usual. It is a "lost spark" system so it triggers twice, but you can definitely fine-tune using that method if necessary. I settled for the standard timing, which works pretty well. It would be useful to get in touch with Rick, who manufactures these ignition systems. He will be able to tell you more about fine-tuning I am sure. Furthermore, it would be a good idea to suggest he implements a trim adjustment to compensate for different altitudes, now that you mention it. It shouldn't be too complicated to add, and would make that system much more versatile than it already is. Do you intend to discover remote areas with yours? I would love to go on an adventure like Superkarpata for example. It must be so much fun... Speak soon I hope, stay in touch.

Yes, it is a brake or "constantly fricktion part". Purpose is to stop faster preventing long time of free spining after starting. Maybe the intention was to stoped rotation before next starting process begins. Also such motors shound never running without load becouse of no limitation of rotation speed. But it is only imoportant to know when its running without load on your work bench. My "brake" was demaged and I put it out without any missing long time ago. Other brakes are still there.

I personally like to antiseize the exposed parts of the pistons and where they touch the brake shoes. Basically anywhere two metal points touch. Even if it's not needed it's a rust preventer. Don't lube the lugs as it will throw off the torque value causing you to over stress the stud.

Nice Video! How long did you make the spark plug wires?
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Long enough for the module to be relocated behind the driver's seat. I started by bolting the ignition module to the chassis, and just laid out the wires from there. I have a 100m reel of 7mm braided copper HT lead, so I didn't really measure. I just laid it out, cut the wires and crimped them accordingly. 🙂

@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to do it on the bench, an extractor is required to remove the hub assembly from the half shaft sleeve. I will invest in the tooling to do it by the book. If you do recall how you went about changing them, please let me know! :-) Thank you for watching.

I have looked into that, but for starters, it is illegal to fit anything else than factory fitment, here in Belgium, and secondly, it is insanely expensive. I would much rather have the shell sandblasted and resprayed for about the same price as a disc brake conversion.

Man that has got to be the most convenient jacking point in automotive history. But how did they expect you to access the adjuster with the drum on? Rather weird. Unfortunate about the seized slave piston, it must be unbelievably wet where you are.
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Жыл бұрын
It is properly well built, and such a joy to work on. It is all a bunch of sub-assemblies just bolted together, designed to be serviceable in a pinch I suppose. Absolutely love it. I was also surprised about the state of the brakes after such a short period. Even if it is easily serviceable, it is heavy work... I know that the later Diesel versions have brake discs. A conversion is tempting, although prohibitively expensive...
