The main reason why Chemin d'Antony is so little patronized is because it only has a 2 tph frequency at the moment. There are ongoing works to build flying junctions at Massy and Choisy-le-Roi and thus increase capacity on the line. Currently TGVs bypassing Paris prevent more RER services from being extended from Pont de Rungis to Massy. There is also a long term proposal to build a separated southern bypass for TGV trains that would serve Orly airport, but it's unlikely to happen due to its cost.

@KyrilPG

@@georgebattrick2365Probably because Geoff said "merci monsieur", which is "thank you sir" and Yohann answered with the formal "vous" automatically, as an autopilot driven response. The level of address, formal or familiar, is often triggered by the sentence you reply to, especially in cases of stress like being on camera, instead of the level of familiarity you have with the person you're talking to.

Bulleid built a double deck electric unit, the 4DD, which went into service in 1949, but our restricted gauge meant that delays with loading/unloading rather negated the extra passenger advantage! However, it was only scrapped in 1971, but rarely ran: I never saw it and used to spend time at Waterloo, Charing Cross and London Bridge when young. There are photos on the web.

Nothing is decided yet, but one of the possible plans that is being debated here is to transform Orlyval into metro line 19 after the line 14 extension to Orly Airport is completed. It would keep its current rolling stock but it would get integrated into the normal fare system and additional stations would be built across its route (Chemin d’Antony would be one of them) to transform it to a small local metro line. This is the plan that the towns along the line want to see implemented, but in the end, it’s the region that will decide (the biggest obstacle being the classic “lack of money”)

*Small update for you all regarding **_Chemin d'Antony_** station :* This station no longer is on the RER network now, as the line servicing it (Savigny ↔Versailles branch of the RER Line C) has been morphed into a tram-train line, namely Paris Tramway line 12. Which means that the "loop problem" on the RER Line C (that had tourists in Paris wanting to go to Versailles, taking the 1 hour long side of the loop through 40 stations including this one, instead of the 25 minutes short part of said loop through Meudon and Viroflay) is also gone. *In regards to the Metro Line 14 extension to Orly Airport mentioned at **10:30** :* This extension has opened last week as I type this comment (on July 10th 2024), and allows -albeit on a small added fare- direct high-speed connection between Paris and the Orly Airport, instead of the indirect small metro shuttle OrlyVal and the direct bus shuttle OrlyBus. Line 14 has also been extended north from Saint-Ouen to Saint-Denis, allowing an extra connection to the Stade de France. Just so you know.

@tenalafel
@tenalafel Жыл бұрын
@@drdewott9154 actually no. The lines on tire were built as standard subways, in the 1960s/70s they "upgraded" them to tires... That was long before the VAL in any of it's incarnation was ever designed. The Line 14 might share some genes due to being built as an automatic line almost from the begining. But Line 1, was automated in the early 2K...

Wow neat stuff. Btw if you ever come to Copenhagen and wanna do a least used station on our S train system, I'm 99% sure that the least used station with a regular service is Kildedal, also on a line named the "C". As for least used without a regular service, there's Høvelte on the "A" line which isn't even on the route map, only has a wooden platform in the northbound direction, and only has a few trains a day stopping there because it serves a military base and is used by troop personnel to commute to duty. For the return trip they take the night bus the other way.

In Britain two four-car EMU double deckers were trialed just after World War Two on the Charing X - North Kent line, which was very congested. UK loading gauges were smaller than in Continental Europe, so seating was very cramped, staggered between levels with poor ventilation. Loading and unloading crowded trains was very slow. One can imagine mass outbreaks of claustrophobia and heatstroke. The experimental units were kept on for a while, but the principle has been discarded for Britain.

Issue with double decker trains is also that they're much less accessible because of the steps, and also the steps take up space, so you lose out either on seating and standing space, or you have to have fewer doors. There's a reson why Paris is pretty much the only place with double decker trains on a metro style service, and even then the RER C isn't as muh of a 'metro' service as A or B which are single deck.

We have double decker trains in several places in Germany as well. You lose out on seats for the stairs but that is rectified by the fact that you get more seats on the second deck. You are mistaken. RER A Peak hour capacity increased from 13014 to 23504 seats and 42000 to 43500 standing when double deck MI2N replaced single deck MI84. Other cities may not need it but Paris does. Starting in 2025, RER B will switch to double deck with the arrival of MI20. RER E already has MI2N.

@@quantisedspace7047 You have to bear in mind that a route master has the same amount of doors total as one side of the stock in the video. I don't know what the capacity of a Z 20500 is, but i'm willing to bet it's at least 3x higher then a routemaster. Dwell times are king when it comes to rapid transit, and it's why Tokyo experimented with 6-door cars with the E231 series. Double decker cars just can't clear fast enough, especially on narrow platforms.

Oh man ! Been a subscriber to Yohann's channel for a while. What a collab ! I'd suggest also a Least Used Station on the Transilien system, but maybe, that's way too deep in the Paris suburbs. It would, however, be a good use of Geoff's desolate scale.

I used to know every station of Paris metro, not anymore now and I still don't know every station of London tube. Geoff we want videos about Berlin metro, Madrid metro ... Or even better Tokyo metro :D

Salute! That was tres excellent...On double decker trains: Advantageous on medium and long-haul, not on short haul for a number of reasons, not least embarking and disembarking rate. Aussies are now abandoning them partly for this reason, and others in N.A. also now looking at single decker emus v. loco-hauled DD coaches. The ratio of floor space for seats vs floor space for doors divided by the time to load/unload optimizes differently depending on travel distance/time between stops.

Those are a bit different to the Australian double decks as the entry doors are lower due to the lower platforms, which means the lower deck has more space as they don't need as much of a step

How are the Aussies abandoning double-deckers? They‘re currently testing their latest generation of DD EMUs and I‘m pretty sure I haven‘t seen any plans of Sydney Trains to introduce single-level units.

Except if you put enough and larger doors, like on Paris RER lines A and E that have 3 doors per car per side. Or the new upcoming trains on lines B & D (and E) that have shorter cars, which, while keeping 2 doors per side, will increase the overall number of doors. Plus these new trains have doors that are almost 2 meters wide, and feature very large inside platforms (at door's height) that run in the open gangways between cars, allowing a larger flow of passengers as they act as a buffer for station movements. That's how they massively increase capacity without increasing dwell time. Sadly, it's probably not gonna be enough to cope with the crazy high demand on the RER network and the worst bottleneck that is the shared tunnel of B & D lines between Chatelet les Halles and Gare du Nord. It will only ease the situation a bit. Each line's demand would require a separate tunnel with 2 minute frequency per track but the cost is so high and the construction so bothersome that they keep postponing the decision (which only makes it costlier).

Yeah I think that, for now, the line B is the only Paris RER line which has no double decker trains. At all. I think it's the 2nd biggest line in the region with around 1 million passengers a day if I remember correctly, so it needs the double decker trains. The line is old, complicated, particularly the south of the line 🙃 In a few years we should get MI20 trains (Matériel d'Interconnexion commande 2020 🙃), specifically made for this line, yes 🙃 The line A gave some of its trains to the line B if I remember correctly, so it also had classic trains before the MI2N (Matériel d'Interconnexion à 2 Niveaux 🙃) and the MI09 (Matériel d'Interconnexion commande 2009 🙃) I think the lines C and D had old trains before but now both only have double decker trains (Z2N, Regio2N...) like the line A, And I think the line E, the newest one, had double decker MI2N trains (like the line A 🙃) since its opening, but now they added classic (single deck 🙃) Z 50000 / NAT (Nouvelle Automotrice Transilien 🙃) trains for shorter services where these trains can run and where Transilien think we don't need double decker trains for some reason 🙃 But it should get more double decker trains with the Z 58000 / RER NG (RER Nouvelle Génération) coming soon, I hope 🙃
