You are building new lines without electrifying them? Perhaps you should tell your engineers that it is the 21 st century now. 🤦
@meijiturtle38145 минут бұрын
Isn't there something missing from this railway? Elect..... something or other?? It's the 21century folks. Brighton got an electric railway in the 1880s.

Is there a photograph of the old Winslow station? It would be great to compare them for facilities and architecture.

Its looking quite likely that universal will open a huge theme park in the Kempston Hardwick area, likely around 2030, so hopefully the line is futureproof and built with that in mind.

Hi Geoff, former local here! About 11 years ago, my brother and I visited the abandoned Winslow station which was actually a little further up the line - geographically the name never made sense as it was closer to the village of Swanbourne rather than Winslow but I digress. There were rails still on the ground so we trekked along them for a bit and wandered around the abandoned platform, it was very fascinating. We even spoke to the older gentleman who lived in the house next to the platform (although I'm not sure if it was the original station building). A quick glance at Google Maps and nothing seems to remain of the old station anymore, which is very sad. But I'm happy this line is being brought back into use, can't wait to ride it when it opens!
@rupertsmith73342 сағат бұрын
I think that was Swanbourne station, it had a public footpath that crossed the line there. Winslow station was definitely in Winslow, at the bottom of Station road, not 100m from where I'm sitting now!
@adriansmith382 сағат бұрын
Actually there was a Winslow station and also one at Swanbourne - your memory sounds like the Swanbourne one that was indeed recently demolished as part of East West Rail - not sure why really.
@theundeniablegem2 сағат бұрын
@ ahh I was told by my grandparents who lived in Winslow that the station by Swanbourne was called Winslow… that being said this was a long time ago, I could be remembering wrongly!!

No connection with HS2 services seems a bit of a missed opportunity, there are otherwise no orbital east-west connections for HS2 passengers anywhere outside of London and Birmingham planned. The connection to the Chiltern mainline at Bicester is also not great, looks like over 1km.

What wonderful architecture, obviously influenced by Palladio. But you never seem to comment upon the blandness of these new stations. I wonder why?

Somewhat fitting that you've got a soundtrack of traffic noises at the station that shares its name with the guy from Police Academy who could produce his own.

I wish they'd move on from the prison aestetic for new stations,. I'm not suggesting going back to a victorian style, there are plenty of ways of building new things that don't look like prisons.

So the new Winslow station has an entrance/exit only on the side of the tracks away from the town. That will annoy travelers from day 1, won't it?

I wouldn’t have thought there’d be the demand for any extra services stopping at any intermediate stations between Bletchley and Bedford - wouldn’t it make sense for the dark blue line to run non stop?
@pmberry6 сағат бұрын
Nice explanation, Geoff. Makes sense for the Marston Vale line to continue to run essentially as it is presently does while the regional trains will make fewer stops there. (I often wonder how such a quiet line survived Beeching - maybe one for a future video.)

Milton Keynes, Bletchley, Oxford and Cambridge all connected by one rail line is crazy. Is this the UK finally waking up? Should’ve been done when Milton Keynes was built as part of the New Towns Act though. Next; Manchester needs proper investment and should get a metro system to work alongside the new 🐝 branded busses and metrolink trams. North; Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds rail connection East-West rail’s; Oxford, MK,BL, Cambridge line with the corridor of new affordable housing and business parks along the line. South; Bakerloo extension to Lewisham/ and new train stock - or better yet, a North-South London modern crossrail line, spilt the Northern line into two separate lines by rebuilding Camden station. HS2 to Brum, East Midlands parkway, Manny and then Scotland.

It's such a shame that even when new stations are built and new services are introduced in this country, they are assumed to be aberrations from a car-dependent norm. I wonder if every new station in this country will always be next to a busy road and furnished with massive car park.

0:38 December 2016 was when the spur from Bicester Village to the Chiltern Main line opened. The line from Oxford to Bicester Town (it was renamed in 2015) had reopened nearly 30 years earlier, in May 1987.

When I was at Bletchley on October 23rd (just the third day of testing apparently) I saw one of the test trains - a GWR 800 series. I thought it was a bit odd but maybe some of the services will be operated be GWR. Or maybe they're just clearing the route for 800-use in the future. Ironically, on leaving Bletchley I travelled into Euston, took the tube to Paddington then another train to... Oxford! This line will be really useful as a London-avoider and even better if it linked the WCML and Midland ML to the ECML too - there's nothing south of Leicester/Peterborough that does that. It would be nicer if at least some services also continued to Reading, or at least Didcot to bring the GWR main line into the mix too. Perhaps the Didcot - Oxford stopper could be extended to Milton Keynes.
@norbitonflyer56257 сағат бұрын
As I understand it the new line may be used by GWR (or possibly Avanti, using its similar class 805s) as a diversionary route, but there are no p,lans for reguklar services over it using IEPs
@garybroadhurst35487 сағат бұрын
@@norbitonflyer5625 Ah right. I know when Euston closes there is often a Milton Keynes to Bedford(?) rail replacement bus service where pax. continue into London. That must be a nightmare! It's a shame there is neither the track connection or electrification allowing Avanti to run a skeleton 390 service from Milton Keynes to Bedford - or even into St Pancras.

I remember looking down on the construction of Winslow station a few years ago thinking wow services to Cambridge from here! But now the person i visited in Winslow lives in Scotland and I don't live in Cambridge anymore 😂 So glad they're building this though. Being able to not transfer through London to get to Oxford will be awesome.

So far, all videos on East West Rail has been about the West end of the line (no doubt because this is Stage 1 of the project). However, they missed an important trick with this project: most (if not all) of the track will not be electrified! Yes, this would be more expensive, but this approach is so short-sighted! I live in a village just a few miles south south west of Cambridge South and there have been many objections to the proposed plans in this area (disruption to the area, health issues to be faced by residents with respiratory health problems, etc.). Yes, there have been consultation meetings with local people, but these seem to be just box-ticking exercises. I know that you can't always stand in the way of progress, but we are not just ostriches sticking our heads in the sand (not that ostriches actually do this!).

Whilst it serves a function, that station is an example of some truly awful building & landscape design...Bland, dull, grey, boring, overly-dominated by practicality, zero architectural merit, featureless with no planting or trees...what a wasted opportunity...it looks like an East Berlin station of the 1970's...👎👎👎
