There’s a quarry in Lord Hill, Maine which I found a vain of this very fluorescent autunite along with other minerals

That’s very cool, I know that area a little bit, but unfortunately it’s an 8 hour drive from where I live so not an easy day trip.

I wish I could go mineral hunting with you because of the exciting finds. I live on Bainbridge Island and can only find beach rocks out here. Though I have been able to travel to nearby places like Walker Valley. I collect the UV minerals but have not been able to get the Autunite yet. I love your videos.❤️

UV minerals are a lot of fun to find. Besides beach rocks, I think there are locations on the coast lines in Washington that have cool fossils but I'm not sure where. I would recommend researching around your location to see what you can learn and find. Hope you find something cool and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos.

@@GeoForge Great advice and I have found that there are micro-fossils on Bainbridge Island. The Seattle fault runs right under the south end of the Island and I have found the fossil location. Keep up the great videos they are inspireing.

Some of the little flakes I have found up there are kinda hot, like in the 500CPM range. Its a good area for collecting. I need to head back there.

At least you invested in a black light. Get some spare 3.7v batteries and there are much better tweezers than your mom’s eyelash tools. What is your goal on picking this stuff up? The mines near Las Vegas I grew up around were fenced off including the tailing piles. Simple tools will make you more successful in both quantity and quality, good luck.

What is the blue glowing stuff
@GeoForge
@GeoForge Жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly but I'm assuming its just either the afterglow of our lights on the ground or maybe a piece of trash glowing in the light. There are lots of pieces of reflector tape, and other junk mixed up in the piles. Some feldspars and other minerals can glow too.

Do you just need a UV light or a geigercounter
@GeoForge

A UV light is all you need to find these minerals. A geiger counter would be cool to have just to see how much radiation is in the area.

What is this stuff used for? What is the Value? I ask because I have some stuff I found the lights up but really know nothing of value or uses. Do you crush it up and mix it with something else or can you polish the chucks? OH and I got a light that has a White Light, Yellow Light & 365 UV. What the hell is the Yellow light for?

Autunite is mined for its Uranium. I heard that the Autunite for this location is considered weapons-grade in uranium enrichment but I'm not sure if that is true. I imagine once the uranium is processed from the Autunite, it could be used in weapons or more likely to be used in nuclear reactors. The value of the samples I collected get their worth mainly as specimens. They are worth something to mineral collectors. You don't polish them, I just wash them and put them into plastic foam based containers. The minerals break apart easily. I've seen just a few grams of the stuff anywhere from $20-$50 online, sometimes more. As for the yellow light you mentioned, I'm not sure what you could use that for.
@xro5841
@xro5841 Жыл бұрын
@@GeoForge Just saw a video or two that kind of implied the yellow light was just a dimmer light source. Like Old headlight compared to the bright white headlight now a days. Maybe used by doctors (usually in pen lights) for looking into peoples eyes, at the retina. Never got that one. Thanks for the reply. All the stuff I have ever found has just been for looking at as kind of cool glow deco. Not sure I'd want the stuff to have a Radioactive ability as well.

You mite consider wearing a mask, the dust should have a good quantity of alpha and beta particles
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 3 жыл бұрын
We have worn masks in the past which is a good idea but a respirator would be much better. That was a concern of ours as well, we try to avoid breathing the dust. People ride their ATVs in and near the area which makes me wonder how much they breath in from the dust they kick up when riding around. The tailing piles are everywhere from this mine and others near by.
@holycrap8367
@holycrap8367 Жыл бұрын
are they safe?
@GeoForge
@GeoForge Жыл бұрын
For the most part yes. They are radioactive minerals so caution is needed not to breath it in or ingest any of it or the surrounding dust when collecting it. Storing it in a safe container is also recommended.
@holycrap8367

@@GeoForge is it safe to touch those things bare hand?
@GeoForge
@GeoForge Жыл бұрын
@@holycrap8367 I would recommend gloves when handling it but I have handled them with my hands. The radiation apparently can be stopped by your skin and other objects such as paper, plastic or glass. Still, would not recommend it especially for long periods of time. Some Autunite seems to be more radioactive than others so I would imagine the radioactivity ranges from sample to sample and from where it is collected.
