In 1974 the Cypriot government ( also the Cypriot people) wanted to unite with Greece as one country. Turkey didn't like the idea so they invaded the island to stop it.

he's not explaining it well. There is no "greek cypriot" and " turkish cypriot" site. What he calls "greek cypriot" is actually the Free Cyprus republic that should belongs to both greek and turkish CYPRIOTS The other side is illegally occupied by Turkish troops when turkey invaded in 1974. and that';s why there's a buffer zone. That part was "self proclaimed" as turkish republic of cyprus but no country except Turkey recognises it because it;s illegal.

Radical Greek extremists wanted to kill all the Turkish Cypriots of the island so that's why Turkey invaded the island to protect the oppressed Turkish minority there.

Ahhh, the times when Geography Now videos were like 10 minutes long :) This one is from 4 years ago, since it's from beginning of the alphabet, but Barbs then gradually over years started to make longer, more informative videos. Don't know, if he plans to revisit those earlier and include more info., but yeah, all of the countries from start of alphabet are shorter than those towards the end. He's now at the start of S letter, that's why earlier you didn't have his video for Spain to react to.

Hi ok what we just watch is not exactly what happened there .start from the beginning at the time of the ottoman turks ,they had occupied half of eastern Europe plus cyprus.they didn't want it so they sold it to the British. So the uk had ownership of cyprus .when the British got kicked out of the Suez canal. They moved to cyprus ,made sense they are the owners .fast forward a little bit .the island majority was 80 % greek cypriots and 15% turkish Cypriot s and the rest other citizens .ok now the greek cypriots want to joined greece naturally culture language all the same .But the British had other plans ,because of its strategic position in the med ,close to russia middle east it makes a big army base for the west.so the Turkish cypriots started to go against the idea of one bad leader to another.so they wanted to join Turkey. This conflict went on during from 1945 to 1960 .alot got killed from all Cypriot s .the time of the cold war ,Greece and turkey were in nato and uk.they all became guarantor s for cyprus. But the U.S.A Henry Kissinger needed to control the area scared of a russian influence on the greek side being greek orthodox having same faith as the Russian s.so Henry Kissinger gave the turks a 3rd of the island .it was planned that.way to move people from the north to the south and south to the north having turkey controlling the north .the greek junta betrayed the greek and Cypriot forces .the brits were just monitoring the situation. So 1974 turks invaded the island ,while the Cypriot nation thinking it was a just a excercise.the turks had the newest american weapons at the time ,jets ,navy, tanks the lot .little cyprus had second world war weapons to defend themselves. Hard battles were won buy greek Cypriot s but overwhelmingly couldn't keep out nato s turkey.Greece realised what happened, that there own government was betraying there brothers in Cyprus, launching a attack to help the Cypriot s and went against the junta.and pushed the turks and stopped the turks from taking all of cyprus ,so from now it's the only European country split in half .All the world recognized Cyprus republic. The north is not Turkish its run buy a pretend state recognized by Turkey. So that's the cypriot situation and the west ruined cyprus to keep it as a base .and spy station because of its strategic location.
