I grew up around a bunch of Liberian refugees in the 90s, and one of the cultural things that I picked up from them is the snap-handshake thing. That is, when they shake hands, they snap their fingers, but it's a shared snap. You apply pressure with your middle finger against the other person's middle finger during the shake, so when you pull back it makes a snap. If you can do it, it's a fun way to show off cultural competency to other Liberians.

Too many don't even know about our territories. Guam suffered brutally during World War II at the hands of the Japanese, but the native Chamorros stayed loyal to us despite the occupiers' attempts to change them by force. They even did their best to keep the few surviving soldiers hidden and alive until we returned, at the risk of their own lives (sadly, only one American soldier was still alive by the 1944 recapture). Truly impressive people.

It took me until senior year of high school to figure out that this place existed and even then it was a brief mention in a world history class. For some reason the American education system likes to leave out places like Liberia and Puerto Rico, and it's a bit of a shame because these places help improve understanding of continental USA history tremendously.

Thanks so much for helping people know us a bit more than they did yesterday. While growing up in Costa Rica, we had to learn the capital cities of each province. Coincidently, there is a city in the Province of Guanacaste called: Liberia. So, after moving on to learning about other countries in the world, I came across that indeed there was a country named Liberia. I had thought somehow that there was a connection with the people from Guanacaste or the Liberians. I don’t know where the name Liberia originated from (whether it was Spanish, Portuguese, English or Other). I don’t think Barby discussed it in this episode; but the fact that Costa Rica’s Second International Airport is located in the city by the same name as an African Country with no relation to each other is quite interesting.
