I'm Black Canadian, and Sierra-Leone is my first name. My mom named me after Sierra-Leone because it was the first country to repatriate enslaved Africans from the US (1815), which is where our family is originally from in North America. A couple years ago I took a DNA test to find what African ethnic groups I belonged to, and I ended up being part Sierra-Leonean! I had a good happy cry about it; it felt like I had been honoured with my ancestors name this whole time without knowing it.

Ever since I found this channel during high school, I have been waiting patiently for the day until you cover the Nigeria and Sierra Leonean Episodes. This current episode about Salone is very deep to me, as it deals with a part of my family history that unfortunately, I have not learned so much about. By making this episode, and now being able to watch it in my Sophmore year of college, I not only feel extreme gratitude but also feel like I know more about my deceased mother's home. Fun fact: when Miss Universe was held in Manila last 2016, Sierra Leone's representative was well loved by everyone. Although she didn't get into any semifinalist post, she eventually became a model. We also heard about the sad story of their representative in the 2018 edition were she arrived late in Bangkok. She was allowed to represent Sierra Leone the following year, and even wore an evening gown made by a Filipino designer. We love them, and we do hope someday their representative will be crowned. Glad to see you mentioned about the tie with Bangladesh. I teach in a Bangladeshi university and find students from Sierra Leone, flying all the way to study in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi NGOs also have operation in Sierra Leone. Just one clarification regarding Bengali and Bangladeshi. Bengali is the ethnicity and Bengalis live predominantly in Bangladesh, of course, but they can be seen in India, arguably Myanmar, and many other countries as expatriates. On the contrary, Bangladeshi is the term used to mean the people from Bangladesh. In your script you said Bengali a couple of times to mean Bangladeshi. Not a very big mistake (some may feel otherwise though), but I thought, it's good to bring to your notice. Cheers.

Thanks so much for such a well researched and information-dense video!. I lived as a child in Salone in the late '80s and early '90s. My family had to pack up when the civil war came to Freetown. On the day the rebels came to Freetown, the principal came in class and said "kids! Surprise! We're taking you for a surprise field trip to the American Embassy! Now! Take your backpack and get to the bus!" ...and that was the last time I set eyes on my beloved school (AISF). We left a few weeks later. Never got to say goodbye to any of my wonderful teachers (Mrs. Hume-Dawson? Ms. Hutton? Mrs. Chiney Coker?) or my best friends. While it was sad for 12-year-old me to leave, I cringe at all the senseless pain and suffering that so many local families and children had to endure for years. I still get teary-eyed when I think of it all, I had a beautiful childhood there and I miss it so much.

Most of the black loyalist lived in New York then the revolution happened and the Brits promised freedom if you fought for them. Most moved to Birchtown, Nova Scotia. Some guy, something Peter kept asking for their own land in Africa. British abolishtionist (forgot his name) who was a navy Capitan helps them sail to their colony of Sierra Leone. They established Freetown and were a port city where drunken sailors would go to spend the night. They sold mainly rum and did very well for themselves.

I have a nice story with the large butterfly: when I was in elementary school we went to a butterfly house in my city and when I was just standing somewhere to see some of them, one of these gigantic butterfly landed on my shoulder and stayed there for bout 15 min. That thing was bigger than my head, it was really cool.
