In this Country Spotlight, I explore the amazing country that is Norway! This was a fun game, minus my apparent lack of scanning skill...

Thanks for watching the video! This wasn't the most impressive attempt at Norway (or Geoguessr in general), but I have plenty of other videos where I do much better :) Make sure to leave a comment suggesting a country for next time, and follow me on Twitch! twitch.tv/chicagogeographer

I'm from Norway, and I also found this difficult! But a good way to tell north from south in the country is to look at the tree line. Above the arctic circle trees don't grow above 300 meters and they're just generally few and far between.

I'm really glad you finally played this map. I absolutely love Norway. Unfortunately you didn't get any of the cool fjord regions but maybe next time. )) At least you did have Sognefjell on the last round, the highest mountain pass in all of Northern Europe. After almost a year, they finally restored the highway numbers :O (it was actually about two weeks ago, forgot to tell you about it). Right after I sent them my second report complaining about the absolute idiocy of not displaying a country's two most important routes on the map, idk if that had anything to do with it though. Another thing; please add Hungary to the country spotlight list. It's probably not the most interesting country around but I'd like to see you try to pronounce Nyíregyháza, Berettyóújfalu or Hajdúszoboszló. :P

Yeah I was thinking that I saw the road numbers that you mentioned. Good thing they fixed it finally! Maybe your message did help out haha. Hungary would be very fun!

@@ChicagoGeographer Just make sure to look at a topographic map of the country before playing. Very few places in Hungary have mountains, so when they do show up they can be immensely helpful. Geoguessr map: www.geoguessr.com/maps/5c69e11c1554906e04dede26

The last round was in the particular mountain region of Southern Norway. Like in other countries topography matters a lot though it's hard to tell from a bird's eye view map, with only faint topographical markers. The vegetation is rather similar in the very north of Norway in Finnmark - perhaps the easiest way to distinguish is that Finnmark is one of the few flat areas in Norway. Having been in both areas I knew this, but I still found it hard to pinpoint the exact locations, props to the people who did.

I'm from Bergen and found it hilarious when you were way up in the north trying to find it but the most important thing is that you did find it eventually! :)

When you want to find the road number in Norway, the easier way is to look for the Yellow Diamond signs (Forkjørsvei) they always have a sign under that says what road you are on. Almost all geoguessers I've seen, just ignore, or don't see, those signs.

Regarding the last location, Krossbu is a popular mountain lodge at almost 4000ft above sea level in the Jotunheimen national park. At that elevation there will be no trees even in southern Norway, where the tree line is at ~3000ft.

You were really to close to Norway's tallest mountain, Galdhøpiggen, in the last round (18:31). When you're in the region, maybe Finland next? It would be nice to hear you pronounce some Finnish names. :)

Funnily enough, on the first round where you saw Knarvik on the map. That was actually the wrong Knarvik. There's another Knarvik west of Bergen which was the one the signs were leading to.

If you want something different that will really kick your ass, try my "Ocean Views (hard)" where every location is within sight of an ocean or well-connected sea/bay/etc. I also have a "scenic and isolated" if you get sick of the water but like the scenery. Looking for signs or searching the mini-map for location names won't help for most of the pins on either map, so it kind of forces a different way of playing the game.

That was just entertaining :) Honestly, learning to pronounce Norwegian is a lot of work. I dislike when Americans don't care about pronounciation on foreign words and names they use a lot, but to expect them to be able to pronounce our small language is too much :)
