Worthwhile lecture for opening our eyes to some of the nuances associated with slope stability modeling.

In example 3, the final slip surface of the slope W is still different from the slip surface from UTEXAS, even though the FoS value is the same

Good presentation. But I would say that all these pitfalls are never problems if switching to more advanced slope stability analyzing method - strength reduction approach - using a FE or FD platform.

But I thought FD code are uneasy to use with complex boundary conditions

instead this "old fashioned" method use FEM modeling of with C-fi reduction algorithm. It always leads you to univocal solution of any stability problem, together with influence of water. No need ti divagate "circes" or other shape of slip surface. Available for example in ZSoil code (since 1985)

Although I side with you, there is still a place for classic slope stability analysis, and it is not going away any time soon. From the educational perspective it is easier to introduce the student to Limit Equilibrium, and the mechanical-geometrical treatment of failing soil masses than it is to FEM. From the practice point of view, LE analysis is very close to reality in many cases, and has been verified with real landslides and scaled centrifuge models. You can also extend it to reinforced slopes or retaining structures, which in FEM is another type of problem. Think as well about the practicality of programming a spreadsheet to solve your problem, not everyone has access to FEM software.
