Team up with geology professor Shawn Willsey at an exceptional roadcut on Highway 191 which exposes the Moab Fault, a major structure in shaping the scenic geology of the Moab Valley. This roadcut lies right near the entrance to Arches National Park. Learn more about the geology here in part 1 of a 2-part video series.

Thank you so much Professor. I'm in Moab this week for Easter Jeep Safari and looking around at all the formations is far more enjoyable with this video guide. I've been here many years and never known what you've shared. Just learning about the Windgate sandstone to the West of the Visitor center Navajo sandstone was pretty cool. And ... I'll be paying attention to that faulted rock formation you showed on 191 as I drive by this week. Thank you so much for taking your time to do this.

Moab is fascinating for Jeeps and geology. If you haven't done so already, most definitely stopped in the rock shop on Main Street. It was started by Lynn ottinger. He has pretty much spent his whole life in that area doing geology. I visited there 3 weeks ago and he's now 94. Moab is my favorite destination on this planet!

Thanks for the video. I have never studied geology in school but became interested after backpacking in the Sierra Nevada and Moab. I am often buying books to try to make sense of what I am looking at. I also geocache and want to be able to make sense of some of the Earthcaches, which try to teach geology instead of finding a container. There is one of these Earthcaches on the uphill drive into Arches that talks about what you are explaining. Thanks for the visual.

Thanks for the comment. If you are interested in Idaho geology, check out my books: Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho and Roadside Geology of Idaho. If you want signed copies direct from me, let me know. And yes, Earthcaches are awesome and a great idea.

I love this. Thank you so much. We spend a lot of time wheeling there and I’ve picked up a couple of books for Colorado plateau geology and I’m excited to get back into it! I’m subscribed and hope to learn more field geology that I can share with friends and family!
