LOVE the little details in the first half of the music video that hint at the fake confidence masking a deep insecure inadequacy revealed later on: the clearly fake "strikes" edited together, Georgie's hilariously unconvincing lip-synch, his unsure expressions, the awkward stances and movement, the cuts to the impressive footwork that clearly isn't his, the sips of nothing out of his drink... All of these things are so easy to miss on first watch but GOD are they genius! Geordie's acting in this is seriously underappreciated.

It's my favourite part of this track, man. Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed that. Also the whole piece, especially this outro part, is built very smartly using harmony shifts. I adore the dark vibe and the tension of the F chord, when Greep's lyrical character continues to ask the girl about her cost in last verse, and when asking her to "...shoot a smug look at the other girls to make them jealous I chose you" after seemingly brighter vibes of the A and Ab chords. This song is just so well done man.

the bowling gag of it always being a strike even though it's obviously not is actually genius. its a metaphor for the whole song, someone who puts on like they're perfect, but they're actually an extremely insecure person who is paying a hooker to make them look super suave. no matter how awkward he is, or how bad he bowls, the woman he's paying will always laugh, and the ball will always be a strike. and towards the end of the first half of the song, it visibly breaks down and the editing gets worse, just like greep not smiling, dancing or even singing as much during it. when you think about it like that, the second half almost feels like an admission of guilt the character was pressured into telling, or maybe the character doesn't even get any joy out of the whole charade anymore after so many times of convincing the people in whatever bar he's in at any given time during the 'hookup' that he's cool. even the last ball bowled is also the only one that isn't a strike, leaving two pins

The verse after the first chorus where he incessantly repeats how well known around the place he is feels like he's *desperate* to convince the listener he's this suave and charming guy. It's great foreshadowing for the second half of the song where everything is stripped back to reveal it's all fake.
@KSGClive2 ай бұрын
Thinking about it in terms of the second half of the song too, it kinda sounds like while he’s on this fake hookup the girl he hired maybe isn’t really sucking up to him as much as he would like, or that he isn’t getting as much of a kick out of it as he used to, so he feels this need to overblow how suave he is as a means to feed the delusion

It's defo a deliberate creative choice, cause you can see the ball at 1:02 going towards the gutter for a few frames after he moves out of the way, otherwise they'd just cut away a few frames earlier to make the strike seamless cause it takes a while to line up shots like that, so they wouldn't leave it like that - he's even reacting like "oh well you miss some" nightmare for the editor cause editing wise it makes it look more amateur, but think it's actually a creative choice for irony / comedic effect

Something about this video is so Lynchian to me. The bowling alley feels like a place you can't escape from, and you know this the second you step inside. Every time it cuts to Greep's feet I have the feeling that it's not him, but that if I tried to prove it nobody would believe me. The more I listen to this, the sadder it seems to me. But maybe sad is not so accurate a word. Especially towards the end, the guy’s pomposity shatters itself and remains fantastic. Anyway, If The New Sound album’s intention is about desperation, i am already convinced by this one song.

Go to a bowling alley when a league is playing and you'll see that's how good bowlers play. They spin the ball and it curves to hit the pins at a better angle than if it just hits from the front
@spitgorge20214 ай бұрын
pay attention to the ball the whole time
@johnrosario42803 ай бұрын
@@MANmiks Understood, but that's not what Geordie did lol. He even shrugged his shoulders after he threw it like he knew he messed up but was like "oh well." Also, if you go frame by frame (you can do this on desktop with the comma and period buttons) when he steps to the side to reveal the ball at the end, you can literally see the ball teleport magically from the right to the middle. You can also see the ball teleport again at 1:26 if you watch carefully. All edited.
@Jesse-lv2yo3 ай бұрын
I don't think any of it is "obvious" if you have to go frame by frame, they all looked plenty believable to me, even slowed down. Whether or not it's edited is beside the point. It's filmed. There are takes. Even if he actually _did_ get strikes (and he probably did, it's not that uncommon), he obviously isn't that amazing of a bowler. His character in the song and the video are both fake.
