James Kalm felt like yelling “THE GERMANS ARE COMING…THE GERMANS ARE COMING…”. This program is a forty minute strolling extravaganza through three concurrent painting shows that represents a major hunk of German painting from the last thirty years. Michael Werner presents “Georg Baselitz: 1977-1992” a selection of large mixed media paintings many on wood panel, and drawings. This period represents the beginning of the artist’s dramatic ascent to world wide recognition as a major force in contemporary art. “Albert Oehlen: Grau” at Nahmad Contemporary brings together works created between 1997 and 2008, all in tones of gray. These paintings are a creative antithesis from the “switch” paintings Oehlen was simultaneously producing using color, computer design, and digital printing and might be seen as a painterly pallet cleanser. “Martin Kippenberger: Hand Painted Pictures” at Skarstedt is a display of works all created in 1992. Mining his own personality and the persona he’s very consciously created, Kippenberger plays out an endlessly diverse set of compositions and poses all rendering himself as artist, victim, hero, and the embodiment of pathos. This program was recorded December 14, 2017. A musical introduction is provided by the West Village Quartet.

Met Baselitz at the FIAC Paris in 1982 where his inverted portraits made a fuse....I was surprised because Jan Cox (1919-1980) died two years before without any attention.....

You nailed it James...size matters within the oeuvre of abstract giant paintings...if your paintings suck, blow them up.

Thank you for another great gallery tour. The last artist was pretty good. He has something he is trying to say. The highest responsibility of a piece of art is to provoke the higher mind, period PERIOD. I'm pretty sure Kate completely agrees with that statement... THANKS KATE for being there for Loren when he needs you...

Thank you for replying, it is a day maker, because you are kind of a rock star around here...

Kippenberger was barely 44 when he died. I think the Oehlen paintings of that period are amongst the best that he has done; those delicate, sophisticated skeins of wash. He's retained that in the abstract work, but it's more arbitrary.

I wonder how much of the "female painter" bashing is authentic, and how much was calculated to get controversial publicity...(which it did by the ton).

I don't understand why everyone hates Oehlen, maybe its a generation thing. I think that Oehlen is a great painter. The old folks usually hate his work, I don't know why.

Hi James, there is footage of Baselitz drawing upside down. He did it when asked during an interview. However, he seemed annoyed and somewhat reluctant. However, he finished the drawing. My guess would still be that he drew the sketches and turned them before signing them. ;-)
