German artist Georg Baselitz became famous for painting his subjects upside down. By that he attempted to move away from content and narrative, and instead focus on form, color and texture. Baselitz turned to sculpture from 1979, continuing to explore tensions between the figurative and the abstract through crude approximations of figures and body parts carved from wood. The Serpentine South gallery is know presenting sculptures that Baselitz created from 2011 to 2015, accompanied by drawings. The sculptures in this exhibition were not originally intended for public view. They were made as maquettes, or models, in preparation for bronze works. Each wooden sculpture is made from a single tree trunk, which Baselitz carved down using power saws, axes and chisels. The exhibition at the Serpentine South Gallery runs until January 7, 2024.
