One word - 'Authority'. KZbin is inundated by videos of talented amateurs and lesser professionals. Suddenly when one of THE masters of the instrument is heard, one jumps to attention. Nothing further to add. Many thanks for posting.

Agreed! Pierre Hantai is wonderful! Robert Hill, another student of Gustav Leonhardt, has also posted many truly great performances.

Pierre is totally brilliant as we all agree here. His multi hand ornamentation is extraordinary. He is a Total musician.

I needed a while to realize this is not a "real" Händel suite, but a pastiche of his works. Spendidly put together (and played) by master harpsichordist Pierre Hantai,
@yvesfeder13856 жыл бұрын
Pierre BECOMES G. F. Handel in this extraordinary performance. His unerring sense of the inherent musicality of each phrase transports it from the realm of a plain statement to the highest form of musical oratory, and linked together for each movement of the Suite, we are in the presence of absolutely stunning musicianship. How marvelous to hear a truly superior technique like Pierre's in the absolute service of genial musicality, instead of just a showcase for pianistic fluency! Bravissimo Pierre Hantai, nous sommes vos serviteurs!!!

Couperin le Grand Hey Francois, is that authentic on a German harpsichord of 1700ish. It kind of shocked me. Is it in the score.
@piperwalton5 жыл бұрын
@@jimbo2629 A lot of keyboard instruments of that time period tuned the bottom octave to a "short octave," basically to extend the low range of the instrument. It would still be notated in the score as the sounding pitch; but this is why in, for example, Scheidt's Tabulatura Nova, there are some intervals in the low octave which appear impossible to play; but it would be assumed that the harpsichord would have a short octave on the bottom which would make that possible.

I keep coming back to this! The first movement of the overture from the original version of Il Pastor Fido (1712) is a great piece. Except for the final movement I don't think there is a contemporary transcription of the other movements from this overture but they are equally fantastic. A keyboard arrangement of the final movement of the overture concludes another D minor harpsichord suite (HWV 428).
@VitaliyGR4 жыл бұрын
A flamboyant opening transcribed from operatic overture - the fact is, there exists a harpsichord reduction probably by Mr Handel himself, not preserved fully and published "as is" unfinished in the new Halle Edition. So Monsieur Hantaï might have taken it as basis and made his own complete version, so marvellously played :)
@HoaLe-py5ij2 жыл бұрын
Hantaï makes the harpsichord sound gleaming and delicate. His quality playing is also consistent across many albums. Very high level of dedication, indeed!

Another excellent interpretation from, for me, the best harpsichord player today. I have been following Pierre Hantaï's recordings for about 20 years and I am very sorry that I cannot watch him live because not everyone has the financial possibility to travel and sustain a stay in order to see him. However, I consider myself privileged to have seen him live in Lisbon (Centro Cultural de Belém) playing the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 by the insurmountable Bach. Just a curiosity... Did anyone else notice who's in the front row watching the concert?
