Andy, thank you so much for this video. It's so nice to know that FINALLY others have discovered the amazing guitar styling of George Barnes. I've had the good fortune of having connected with George's daughter, Alexandra Leh back in 2011 via Facebook and here's a note I sent her about my first encounter with her dad's incredible guitar playing. "I was just learning to play guitar and I ran upon the Country Jazz LP in a Woolworth's in my hometown of Alpena, Michigan. I found it in the 99 cent bin and it was the only copy. The cover was generic and dreadful, but the title caught my eye, so I bought it. I practically wore that album out, listening to it over and over. It was an overwhelming experience. I didn't (and don't) read music and I don't have golden ears like Charlie Christian or Chet Atkins, so George's playing was WAY over my head, but I loved it. A friend who played in the Atkins fingerpicking style, asked to borrow the LP. He left it in the back window ledge of his car on a sunny day and he returned it warped beyond repair. I was devastated and I regularly visited Woolworth's to see if by any chance I might find another copy of that LP. No luck. I worked for a year in a factory for tuition and then headed to Chicago to attend art school. One day I wandered into a Woolworth's store and thumbed through the budget record bin. Unbelievable! There is was! One--and only one--copy of that rare George Barnes Country Jazz LP. No one in Chicago on that particular day could have been happier than I was as I stood there holding that album.

Nice story! Like yourself, he made a big impression on me when I first heard him. He has such a unique and melodic voice. Have you checked out Alexandra's website? The George Barnes legacy?

George Barnes was known for tuning his Guitar a Fourth above a Standard Guitar w/ thinner strings & a Shorter Scale Length the F Alto Guitar aka Requinto or Guitalele. And the Guitalele Today has that tuning (ADGCEA).

Lovely playing, Andy. You capture the loose, playful quality that's in everything Barnes played. So many nuances and varying techniques, as you mention. This is not "paper music"! It sings and breathes. I'd like to point out that a lot of GB's solos were largely "composed", i.e. played pretty much the same as his recorded version every performance, and relied largely on the composer's original melody. This song is an example. I've known this solo since 1975 when the record came out. (Never tried to play it til I saw your excellent lesson.) But only recently I became aware of other, live versions by the Braff/Barnes Quartet on KZbin, and I noticed that they're all quite close to the original studio version. I think this is partly because he always had the song's melody in his head, whether he was playing it exactly or adding fills and grace notes of his own. I'd bet anything that he knew all the words to these songs, too! It was the Age Of Melody.

Funny you should say that. Another live version came on in the car the other day and I noticed it was very similar to this version also. I agree - it's because he has the melody is in head.

@@jazzguitarwithandy In looking thru the versions of this song by Braff/Barnes I have in my collection, I discovered that B&B re-recorded YCTTAFM for their Fred Astaire tribute album. I had always assumed it was the same as the one on their Gershwin album. It's the same arrangement but George's solo is 200% hotter than the Gershwin version. Check it out.
