I met George in a cocktail lounge in Tenafly, NJ. 1976. Wound up back at his music room. I asked him if he still had the Johnny Smith guitar that he recorded the Breezin’ album with. He went to a different room and came back with it. He handed it to me. I played a little of the melody at that point he took back his guitar and played most of the song. Just for me. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

Tomo, awesome story. I was studying Okinawan Shorin-ryu Karate and my sensei was also a jazz guitar player. He knew my guitar teacher, who did not study karate. Both of these guys were amazing people and huge influences on me and I miss them both. R.I.P. Gene Briscoe-sensei and Jimmy Kay. Gene played around in local clubs in Las Vegas, Jimmy taught classical guitar at UNLV and private lessons out of his home after he retired.

Great lesson, Master Tomo. I have always wanted to learn this song but was "afraid" because it seemed difficult. Your break down and explanation makes so much sense and now I have learned this wonderful song. Trivia bit - in an old interview, George Benson said he did not think the song would be a hit because the beginning line was do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do and who would want to hear that. Turned out to be a big hit and a great tune.

This was great lesson and analysis. I had to LOL a few times cause you are having so much fun and it comes across nicely. I was living on Maui island in 1979 and somehow got exposed to Breezin perhaps on the radio...not sure but that was such a fresh and cool sound at the time and so fitting to be on Maui. I worked very briefly in Lahaina in a restaurant on front street that is gone. it was called the Blue Max. And I was a dishwasher that didn’t go very well for me. The restaurant had an old airplane hanging from the ceiling and it was a bar and grill place up on the second floor. It was one of those airplanes like Snoopy vs the Red Baron. There was a small stage as soon as you walked up the stairs there was the stage. They had usual house band and that was really cool. One night after my dishwasher shift the manager said to me...”do you want a pau Hana drink?”. I didn’t know what that was because I was a Haole. But I figured it out and for those that don’t know that means....finish work drink. Well, lo and behold, who comes in somehow and gets on the stage but George Benson and Lonnie Liston Smith I believe....I have a great picture of Georg Benson but it’s on a slide that I haven’t transferred. he is just dripping sweat....I don’t remember what they were playing but that was a very cool night for me and totally unexpected. I guess GB had a house and recording studio on upcountry Maui. Ok for now, thanks for the lesson. Let me go try those chords and stuff. So fun!

My second guitar teacher in the early '80s told me "forget the rock guys, go get George Benson's albums and study him," and I scoffed. Now, of course, I realize why he would have said that. Very beautiful and tasty playing! I don't go a day without listening to you play. I literally wake up to "Just Funky" everyday. You're a great inspiration and you make me want to buy my own guitar. Being 17 though, I think it might be too late for me.

@@TomoFujitaMusic Oh wow! That was a fast reply! It's the first time one of my idols replied to me. You know, I told myslef: "If Tomo Fujita replies to me, then I'll buy a guitar." I guess it was meant to be. Definitely checking out the site. I think it'll help a lot once my guitar arrives. :D Thanks so much!

I started at 17 by watching a lot of KZbin lessons, learning my favourite songs and the theory behind it all along the way. Better now than never! Tomo has been such a huge inspiration and help!

@@dennis_johnson You and me bro! Wow, I guess it aint too late then. Got any channels you can suggest? Also, does my first guitar have to be really good or can I settle for a mid ranged guitar for now? Getting mixed suggestions for this one.

G1itch DV I started at 18 and it’s been 5 years now. If anything you have an advantage compared to younger kids because it’s something you want to do. You’ll also be able to take more complex ideas faster, practice is all about repetition. My biggest advice to you is practice with a metronome it’s insanely important. Tomos channel is great, Steve Stine also has a great channel for beginner and intermediate players as well. Remember always start practicing realllly slow everyone learns things slow to begin with. We all aren’t Superman be patient with yourself. Good luck man. One last word practice makes permanent not perfect. Make sure you’re practicing properly!
