What an extraordinary man. One of such rarity that the likes of which do not arise in every lifetime.

For the most part a wonderful way to live despite his horrors as he called them. It's sad though that he was seen as an eccentric at the end of life and couldn't tell his stories. Fascinating story with great illustrations. You put so much work and research into your presentations, thank you!

I found the book The Bible in Spain many decades ago in the second hand books stalls on the South Bank of the River Thames. I was so taken by the narrative and the character of the writer that, thereafter, I assiduously sought out and acquired the other books. I love reading them even now and I am very grateful for this video biography of this fine writer . It told me so much about Borrow that I'd simply not known, or would have got to find out. Thank you.

A fascinating story from my old corner of England. I’m sympathetic to George as his hatred of schools and preference to self educate was my way my whole life. He got greatly further than me with languages and surely achieved more fame and renown, despite great adversity and set backs. I’m glad he got much out if his talents in mid life 😊 A sad ending as you say, the fate if many authors 😔 You are also very expert yourself….in your art and craft…I note! 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍

Even then, men understood the psychological power of a man in uniform. They were so sharp in their reds and blues. The white, powdered wigs . .. not so much.

Brilliant video! As a Yarmouth lad myself now living in Oulton Broad, your local content is always very interesting to me! Up until the early 2000’s there was a pub / hotel named the George Borrow next to the OB North railway station (now a pharmacy). Also there is a “Borrow Road” just around the corner from there which I assume is named after him (it runs parallel to a “Romany Road” which perhaps is also connected to his name based on this video?).

Sounds like that must be to do with him, I never saw that sadly, I was unable to find where he lived in Oulton Broad it might of been on one of those roads.

holy moly, my favorite weird 19th century English dude, George Borrow!!!!! I mean, seriously a lot of exclamation points!!! I've read "Bible in Spain" and "Wild Wales" and I have an old collection of his books from a late 19th century print run. He was a complete jerk but absolutely fascinating, and he had a knack for describing landscape that has rarely been equaled.

Note that by "jerk" I mean that he was kind-of rude, basically asking random strangers their religious details. All the time. However, that's why I love him.

I can't say I was Happy with the book 'Lavengro' which has an enthralling start and then sort of peters out, ends up unresolved. "Romany Rye' was just plain boring. Soory, Norwich!

Yes apparently he was good at beginning stories but not so good tying them together with a fulfilling ending say, like Dickens..
