I think this incident was why Bush didn't gloat over the end of the Cold War. My feeling was that he wanted to make the Soviets feel that everybody was a winner, because there might be an incident down the road where the support (or lack of opposition ) from the USSR would be crucial, such as The First Gulf War.

I'm surprised China didn't push to review all Security Council resolutions from 1949 to 1971 and to change their vote where desired. For example the PRC could've retroactively vetoed United Nations Security Council Resolution 82, effectively dissolving the UN military mission in South Korea with the flick of a pen.
@ZheyuanLi
@ZheyuanLi 2 жыл бұрын
lol… there’s no retroactive veto
@jjjannes

@@ZheyuanLi it wouldn't be retroactive, the UN Resolution says that the represantatives from Chiang-Kai-shek unlawfully occupied the UN seats of china, so there votes in the UN Security Council where unlawfully casted, and the PRC can now cast whatever vote they want.

the question one needs to ask is when was the u.s. NOT trying to strong arm people to vote their way? i like the way cavett goes after bush with the tough questions, bush on the defensive. it was bush senior who did all the work to negotiate the end of the soviet union, reagan took the credit. and conservatives were all to happy to give it to reagan because of his war on unions, tax cuts for the rich, and deregulation of banks, which of course led to the saving and loan crisis.

The democracy of Taiwan was expelled to appease a brutal Chinese Communist regime. This regime is just as cruel today, never forget that.
@bai3shu4
@bai3shu4 4 жыл бұрын
Actually there's no country named Taiwan until now. And The Republic Of China (ROC), which is Taiwan that you mentioned, was far from democratic because KMT was the only one party ruling the country at that time. ROC had once been one of American's close comrades during WW2 but was betrayed by the US and forced to leave Union Nations during the Cold War period.

From Taiwanese people, we salute the then Honorable US Embassador to UN Mr George Bush Sr. for his sense of Justice and efforts to keep Taiwan representation in the UN. Not many people know that he was the only Embassador to UN that rushed out to express his sorrow to the Taiwanese representatives for losing Taiwanese representation unjustly. And more than 20 years later, when he became the Honorable President of the United States, again, he used his power to give Justice to the Taiwanese people by approving the sale of 150 F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan to protect Taiwanese people till today. He was a true gentleman who really fought for the freedom and Justice against evil governments, exactly as he did to free Kuwait.

Taiwan was sacrificed in order to cosy up to China. Nixon and Kissenger were doing this as a geopolitical strategy, to take advantage of the Sino-Soviet split and further separate the Communist block. I think that was a smart move by them, in the end though the USSR didn't even last 20 years, but they didn't know that at that time!

The Albanian resolution was clearly written by the CCP. And it demands the UN founding history to be rewritten to include the CCP as a founding member who had it's sea "illegally usurped" by the previous Chinese government, and that it's seat was being "restored" (given back).
