On 9th February 1933, Oxford Union members voted 275 to 153 in favour of the motion 'This House will under no circumstances fight for its King and Country', a result met with outrage from the political establishment. Sir Winston Churchill described the vote as an 'abject, squalid, shameless, avowel', citing it as a reason for Adolf Hitler's later brinkmanship. Ninety years to the day after this motion was first put to the House, would this house still not fight for its sovereign and kingdom?

As an African who lived in the UK during the time the West attacked Iraq, I remember George Galloway's voice in the parliament as he argued against the war. It is nice to see he still has not cowed in to the popular narrative of politicians in relation geopolitics. What a man.

If you go back and look at his testimony before the US Senate Committee (it’s on KZbin) from about 20 years ago he did the same thing.

As a seventy five year old American I can say we've never had a leaders who hit on so many truths and facts. We've never had a leader who had such a command of history. Here in the States nobody knows what happened yesterday, let alone have any grasp of history. My deepest respect for George Galloway. Here in America we never look in the mirror, we are blinded by our belief in American exceptionalism. With incredible arrogance we feel we should rule the entire world.

Well written, the USA has been pulling the reigns on alot of regions around the world since the end of the 2nd world war. Prior to that the British empire did the same .. sometimes it is done with the best intentions, and sometimes it's greed fear and hate .. Pity, because he's an excellent speaker. He was quite brilliant in Congress attacking the Iraq war (I think it was Congress...I can't recall the occasion but he took the to the cleaners). He also speaks powerfully in defence of the Union (re Scottish independence). But this speech is thin gruel.

GG's strength comes from the fact he speaks the truth and doesn't have to play 'word games' and waste time on justifications as politicians often do. George is not an Oxford (or any university) graduate but the width and depth of his knowledge is amazing. I am an Arab and met him once and was astonished by his knowledge about the politics and history of the Middle East that can only be described as 'expert level'

Most Westerners need MORE than a "for god and country" to be pushed into a war... But it would seem that most Arabs that are Muslim only need some cleric to tell them their god has somehow been insulted by some white Western society to want to kill us all. As an ex soldier in a Western country, MY close calls always came because of some RELIGION abuses by some extremist.. I'd rather fight for my society and country than some crowd control tool based on some book written by a bunch of human fiction authors, that has started more wars than anything else on earth.

Just because someone doesn’t do something in a different setting does not mean what they are doing in their own environment is any less valuable or respectable. By your logic, whatever anyone says/do does not necessarily mean very much unless they do it in every other conceivable circumstance which is of course not possible for various reasons. This is reality. Also by your logic, even more people in the UK and Ireland should speak like George as it is seemingly notihing too difficult/impressive but they don’t do they? Which means there is an element of willingness and courage required eventhough it’s a liberal democracy.

Yes, I definitely think it takes no courage to speak to power in liberal democracy, as Galloway is doing here, or in front of a US Congressional committee. And it is very relevant, given what you posted, that in a different environment Galloway is totally gutless, such as when before the likes of Saddam Hussein. Nor did he offer any criticism of either Putin or the Ayatollahs when he was working for RT and Iranian state TV. Why are these three paragons beyond criticism from Galloway? Some hero! Galloway may or may not be right on this occasion, but he is not an admirable figure in any way. You ask why don't more people speak like Galloway? Probably because they don't want to seem like a loquacious windbag or be as shamelessly self promoting, even if they agree with him!

My generation of "veterans" have not gone through a "real" war against the odds, like the Ukrainians. We got paid. We get a pension. Most of us were at minimal risk. A lot of squaddies arrive in the Army with a fractured background already. Their problems are not necessarily the consequence of their military service. They are often societal.

This is the reason his career in politics failed. He stands for something, and that something isn't the brass tack that a career in politics provides, it's the courage of his own convictions. I'm neither left, right or centre, I agree on a lot of what he says and disagree with much as well, but this speech just fills me up, he was on the front line against Blair and he agains leads the line against the West and it's handling of these atrocities on all sides. A true masterclass from George. Only comparable to Peter Shore making the case for the UK not getting involved in the Euro 'project' at the Oxford Union debate in 1975. How fast people forget about the deals they've made, in the early 1990s Ukraine held on of the strongest nuclear arsenal in the world, and Ukraine gave it up when UK and USA asked it to do so, in order to regulate nuclear weapons. Basically sacrificing our own security to make the rest of the world feel more safe, in exchange of promises that UK and USA will come and help if Ukraine will be attacked. And now 30 years later these people are talking about PROXY WARS, how convenient. We did what you asked us to, not it's your turn to keep your word.
