I'm older and a person could weep watching these two Super Stars talk and GJ sing! Look at Judy when he is singing---clearly she cares deeply for him! AND her Laugh(!) SO sweet and wonderful. Jessel was such a story teller! I think the story must be true about him naming her or Judy wouldn't have so quickly followed him. He was probably a pretty hard boiled entertainer but adores her. Sounds as though they knew each other forever! What a wonderful piece!

I've always read Judy picked her first name from Hoagy Carmichael song "Judy" and George gave her last time " pretty as a garland of roses" Either way a legend discovers another!❤

@@markwhitman9029 The story Jessel tells here is false, but Judy goes along with it. Judy had no trouble embellishing things to make them more interesting, or inventing things out of whole cloth. She needed to entertain. The tale keeps changing; we can only guess. The version I believe: The movie at the theater the night the Gumm Sisters performed was "Twentieth Century," starring Carole Lombard as Lily Garland. That name stuck in Jessel's mind. Judy never liked the name Frances because it was dull, and did name herself after Hoagy's peppy song.

It's not THAT TOUGH times didn't exist when this was filmed--they did but they persevered not sure we will. You listen to all the old entertainers, and almost every one of them will say that Jessel was the funniest of them all at Hillcrest. He was a definite raconteur. And what can you say about Judy? Judy’s few bar of ‘My Bill’ are enchanting. It is so sad that she did not record this song in full as a mature woman. MGM had originally pencilled her in for the part of Julie in their planned film of Showboat ( ultimately made in 1951, after she had left MGM). One can only imagine the stunning performance that she could have given.

@@hollywoodharriet13 Jolson was a star by 1910. Georgie Jessel was always envious of Jolson, it showed in the 20s, and it was more evident in their cordial but scathing friendship in the 40s. You can particularly sense it in their 1940s radio broadcasts, which were few and far between. Let’s face it, they both knew who the bigger star was. 😂

I wish i could've lived in this time. Im 24yo and just got a 1963 Mercury. I think it's an M100. It needs some work, but it's a way more beautiful vehicle than anything today. And my grandpa was the original owner. Im the second. He bought it new in 1963-1964 for about $7000CAD. In the deal, I also got a 1953 f350, it's not as sentimental, but damn, she's a beaut.

Trigger warning: rant coming up. Loved the singing and interaction, but frustrated at the name-changing story Jessel tells. He'd said before that he came up with the name of Garland after a critic friend of his named Robert Garland, and because "Frances" was a pretty "as a garland of flowers." And Judy Garland herself said that she later came up with the name "Judy" after the Hoagy Carmichael song, "Judy." I suppose Jessel changed the facts in order to be more "entertaining," but I'm sorry: I hate it when people play fast and loose with the truth for whatever reason. Okay, rant over.
