Lyrics: He said "I'll love you till I die", she told him "You'll forget in time" As the years went slowly by, she still preyed upon his mind He kept her picture on his wall, went half-crazy now and then He still loved her through it all, hoping she'd come back again Kept some letters by his bed dated nineteen sixty-two He had underlined in red every single "I love you" I went to see him just today, oh but I didn't see no tears All dressed up to go away, first time I'd seen him smile in years He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today You know, she came to see him one last time Aww, 'n' we all wondered if she would And it kept runnin' through my mind "this time he's over her for good" He stopped loving her today They placed a wreath upon his door And soon they'll carry him away He stopped loving her today

I’m GenX, and I grew up, listening to this old country because my Dad loved it. I always loved the newer country when I was in college, but now that I’m in midlife, I revert back to all of the “old country“ because it reminds me of my Dad. This is a great song, and it has always made me cry. No matter how many times I’ve heard it in my lifetime, I feel the heartache to my core.❤

My brothers couldn’t understand why l loved this song so much. They thought a young black man couldn’t possibly love this type of music. I love all genres of music - especially pop and country! “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is perhaps one of the greatest country songs of all time. I can now understand why it was ‘Country Music’s Song Of The Year’ two years running: 1980 and 1981! It’s a classic!!!! Rest in Peace 🕊️ Possum - George Jones…

I vividly remember when I was about 16 years old my late father suddenly yelling for me to come into the living room. He said son come quick and listen. This, he said is probably the greatest country song of all time. I stood and listened to George Jones sing He Stopped Loving her Today on TV. (before the internet and when TV only had 12 or so channels) And as a ACDC, Motley Crue loving teen I was taken aback and absolutely floored. Thank you Dad and thank you George for forever turning me onto REAL country music.

My late dad introduced me to good country music back in the early 80s when I was a child. This was the first George Jones song he let me listen to. Even at 5 years old, it hooked me and i've been a fan of The Possum ever since. I was fortunate enough to see him perform at the Oil Palace in Tyler,Texas here before he passed. His music always reminds me of much better times, those good times with my family and my late best friend watching Hee Haw on TV, and especially singing along with my dad in that old white 1971 Chevrolet truck. I wouldn't trade those times for anything.
