Winter Sun It's not only that, bro. In his DVD lessons he says that he uses triggers only live cuz mics can't get the bass drum to sound normally on such high speeds when playing on a stadium etc. In the studio he uses microphones on the bass drums, so this argument is soooooooooo wrong. :)

Most of the best musicians inside the metal genre plays not only 1 extra genre, but usually a wide range of genres. Even by just appreciation...if you only listen to a genre, you are (for sure) losing some good stuff for you. Specifically talking about drummers... it's veeeery common for metal drummers to play jazz as well.

I know this comment is 4yrs old, but even still, you have to be pretty arrogant to think that a drummer just does what they do for the sake of it when there's a difference in showing and doing what you do because the music you play calls for it.

@slayer8273
@slayer8273 8 жыл бұрын
lukeskywalker lets say it like this. In the late times of joey he was very sloppy and bored during live shows cause he was depressed and on drugs. But if you look at one of his performances before pauls death, RaR 2009 or london arena 2002 you will know why I tell you now that he was way way better than jay ever was. In the early times of slipknot joey was for real the best nu metal drummer on the world. And yeah, there isn't really anyone who is compareable with george... maybe nils dominator from dark funeral. hes also a sick dude blasting for like 20 sec at 285 bpm. Or trey williams from dying fetus
@mrkasaval
@mrkasaval 8 жыл бұрын
I can't really comment on the live performances... however we will prob have to wait and see when jay finally writes his own drum tracks for slipknot. I understand that clown wrote the drums for the gray chapter... Funny thing tho, I think Jays dad is actually way better than Jay...

@waterguyroks 6 жыл бұрын
I'd call this jazz fusion. It's definitely not straight ahead jazz/bebop but I wouldn't call it funk either. Funk is usually a lot more driving/groovy (this swings like Ilan said) and doesn't have so much emphasis on individual solos as far as I know, that's more of a jazz thing. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day since both genres have changed so much over the ages, modern jazz probably would probably horrify the bebopers of the 50s and 60s (not that that's a bad thing).

I am blown away. Neil Peart sought out drum lessons many years after he was already established as (arguably) possibly the greatest rock drummer in history. His playing actually improved as a result. And, relevant to this video, he stretched out enough to be able to play jazz incredibly well and put together a Buddy Rich tribute. George is already the best metal drummer ever, well on his way to be a force in jazz drumming too. Peart, Carey, Kollias.

the truth is only metal musicians have the ability to play almost all kind of music because metal music is the most extreme music and requires a lots of music knowledge

+Alex Papas Many metal musicians (not all of them but many) are the most closed-minded people along with jazz musicians. I've seen more versatility in rock/fusion players, just like Vinnie Colaiuta, Gregg Bissonette, Simon Phillips, Gavin Harrison. You can see these guys in many different situations where metal and jazz drummers don't even dare.
