This is one of the greatest live performances of all time. First of all, the drummer and bass player are just locked in a groove with a vibe that needs no explanation. Their skill is obvious, but trumped by their mutual respect and admiration for each other and for George Duke. Second, the tone of that bass sets the perfect foundation for that crisp snare and kick drum as George Duke sprinkles his pretty notes all over this groove. Lastly, there's George Duke himself. There aren't many keyboardist in the annals of history that compare to this GIANT of a musician, but none (other than maybe Bernie Worrell) who could get as funky. George Duke transcended time and genre by continuously writing and performing amazing songs that left satiated, yet wanting more. I watch this video often as I find it soothing, refreshing, exhilarating and just plain fun. These Masters of Music had a great time performing and it shows. While we are all stunned by the departure of George Duke from our lives, we are blessed and honored to have the library of greatness he left behind. His legacy lives on. Rest in Funky Peace, George. We love you.

@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126
@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126 5 жыл бұрын
@@gavineckler4545 Often I'm accused of being wordy and pedantic, but some concepts you can't spell out with cliches and memes and emoticons. I have given it a lot of thought because i have been stuck on pick up gigs with "guys that couldn't groove their way out of a wet paper bag if their lives depended on it". Nothing worse. And nothing better than being locked in, playing effortlessly, riding a smooth, solid groove. thanks. Cheers. (smiling) Here's somebody that obviously gave it more thought than i did L;DR Leaving few details out, I'd define it as multiple overlapping swings with beat/accents that all instruments lock into (rhythm-responsible instruments should keep sync most frequently & accurately). The overall feel can be varied by offsetting each instruments timing (playing bit ahead the 'beat/accent' or behind). In improvisation if other players perceive a feel change and then change what they do it can cause a chaos as everyone adjusts what they do - perhaps one player changed feel for syncopation-like effect - if everyone in band changes in response the desired effect falls apart. Some coordination/agreement/leading is thus needed for improvisation if one likes doing such tricks. Found this recent book because it referred a paper where academics clearly had recognized one part of the "pocket". (it's not just "band playing in sync". You can get things play in sync in a computer sequencer and it won't be the pocket that people in know talk about - in my dictionary pocket is something that gets atleast some people (*NFP is probably "dancer personality") moving to the music. Otherwise you could say all electronic music is "in the pocket" - I used to do electronic music and to get the pocket I had to find optimal tempo and adjust swings and shuffles for drums first and then play to those) www.amazon.com/Expressiveness-music-performance-Empirical-approaches/dp/0199659648 This is the paper. www.speech.kth.se/prod/publications/files/822.pdf It focuses on adjustment that musically talented players do to their swing in relation to large changes in tempo. One explanation for this is that as the tempo changes enough, the time slice in which invidual note timing swings (shifts around a midpoint) changes in length. Instruments (ADSR) envelope may not be easily changeable (without effects rack) causing the need to adjust your playing so the feel of the swing remains noticeable. The drums (how long their sound sustains) or whatever rhythm instrument that is most in focus determines the optimal tempo through the notes envelope and overlap. Faster tempo requires reducing sustain/release time, faster attacks in order to avoid the sounds getting so overlapped that the feel is lost. Swing (this is what creates the "feel" or urge to dance, the "pocket" is when all players are able to play around the swing - all feeling the swing) : Study of some computer-tracked songs that clearly groove highlighted that the song under study didn't actually have an instrument based swing parameter. Instead the composer was rapidly alternating entire project between two tempos. After lot of listening I conclude that the most skilled compositions may actually have multiple simultaneous swings of different frequency. Swing opportunities: 1) "dialogue" - compose the track in a manner where a variation of same theme is played twice with some modifications (vary the arpeggio, instrument etc) - in particular, tempo. So part of the song is in a different tempo. Typical in classical music. This won't create a pocket, just a "dialogue" between instruments. Perhaps one part/instrument is upbeat and then followed by another more slower and melancholic feel. 2) traditional easy to play swing: When you have your optimal tempo figured out, don't play at that tempo but actually play at say -2% and +2% BPM around it, smoothly alternating the tempo between each half interval (8 beats). 3) dance music swing: have the notes swing also (achieved eg. by the rapid tempo variation explained or instrument specific swing parameter)

These guys are just talking it over lol! I had the great honor of filling in on bass in '74 when Tom Fowler, Zappa's bass player at the time, broke his finger in the middle of their fall tour that year. Zappa had seen me play at Richards, a rock club in Atlanta, after one of his concerts and I got the call quite unexpectedly a year or so later. Duke was his keyboardist then and trust me, he is a MONSTER! Always smilin' and just killin' it. 'Bout as good as it gets for what he does. I was known as Birdlegs then and he always called me Brother Legs. Fond memories!! RIP Brother Duke!

Nothing says jazz so eloquently than those "conversations" between instruments. It's what makes every piece unique, wether it's a jazz standard you've heard a million times, like Autumn leaves or All too soon, or a brand new one. That symbiotic connection among the musicians makes it feel brand new. Every. Single. Time. And that's why I love jazz. PS, this is SO in the pocket it hurts!

Regarding George, as I’ve said previously, he was a big, beautiful Angel. Saw him in early ‘90’s at South Bank, London, where he & Stanley Clarke gigged. I really appreciated Stanley’s musical prowess, but George had another something a- I boxed him up to where my seat was and we grooved together. I could hardly contained myself. We’re both share a day & month of birth and I felt a real syncopated connection with him. m daughter grooved in my tummy with ‘reach for it’s during my pregnancy- so seeing him was an Experience. RIP, Mr. Funk. Jane Russell

Augusta Verbian - excellently said....... and if accurate in no other way, it's one of THE most essential things that locks the band together and captivates the audience, whether they realize this force is happening...... when players listen to each other and play to each other. Contrast that with bands that can play songs with some sophisticated parts but only by knowing their own parts. Not at all to say it's about talent; start and end at the same time is essential, but like here, George's dynamics are responses to Christian's bass hits, CHristian's locked onto that amazing drummer's pocket...... the ability for players to communicate among themselves during a song is pretty much the pinnacle :) NOTHING like dynamics to cause big energy surges in a song. I played in a really great high energy band but couldn't grasp the full-on every beat downhill train without brakes. My band, a 6-piece, played a jazz room that snugly holds 30. We played the Santana medleys, Allman Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Thelonius Monk, Horace Silver, Pink Floyd, Chuck Brown/Eva Cassidy, Steppenwolf, etc. The owner was floored, the audience astounded they could sit and talk with a band taking up about 20% of the space...... dynamics! This included a former Santana member and his full LP rig..... maybe left out the tumba :) We were paid by an owner that doesn't pay bands...... the joke was we were paid to never play there again :) The best gigs of all were all about dynamics. Been loving George Duke's playing since teenhood in the early 70's. Sheila E. played timbales on one of his albums at I think age 17.....scorchin' solo on "We Give Our Love".

@@soundboardist I never said i was, and i was referring to this video and jazz in general, but if you're saying no metal musician is a master in their own right, you don't know much/anything about how complex and intricate metal can be. Its a slept on genre because people assume its just making noise with no structure....kinda like people thought the same with rock and jazz. They're all wrong :) Google Tosin Abasi if you think that, currently the worlds best guitarist.
@gitsurfer27
@gitsurfer27 5 жыл бұрын
@@soundboardist I understand that a lot of people think that but its just not true. Its like saying "all pop music is shallow and bad", first of all what constitutes pop music is broad enough to encompass the Beatles David Bowie etc so that statement would be a simple misunderstanding of what the genre is, or at least a gross oversimplification of it. The same is with metal, as a genre it has more sub genres than any other style of music that has ever existed...certainly not a trademark of a basic form of music that even a 12 year old could write. Modern metal is extremely complex and makes use of complex musical ideas like polyrhythms, atonal/modal interchange melodies....It isn't just a case of one genius writer in a simple form of music, this isn't house music....i would challenge you, if you play an instrument, to play even a simple song in the genre of "djent", a modern metal genre that is anything but simple. You clearly don't listen to it so why do you assume that you know everything about it? I'm not talking about "iron maiden" here, you clearly do not listen to technical metal (that's its actual name). A lot of metal today is instrumental or doesn't have the screaming vocals in it that probably puts you off. Type "animals as leaders" in youtube. Then type "meshuggah" then type "sikth" then type "intronaut"....i could do this all day. You are wrong good sir. And i bet you won't check any of them out will you :) you might just be surprised to what constitutes metal these days.
@gitsurfer27
@gitsurfer27 5 жыл бұрын
@@soundboardist fair enough then i disagree that its tonally basic you would need to dive a bit further into the albums to maybe realise that but I never thought you were an asshole lol i just disagreed with what you were saying. George died way too young,....at 67. Considering B.B. King, & John Lee Hooker, & Ramsey Lewis, all performed well into their 80s. Sadly most of my relatives all died in their early 70s. I don't know how long I will live. I just turned 70 in December of 2023. It was surprising to me. I was exposed to a lot air pollution, worked in jobs where I was exposed to toxic solvents. Most of my friends have already died, too. Dying in their early 60s. It has helped having a state of the arts hospital, just a mile from my house.
