Ya know what's better then shapes? Theory. I've always been amazed by how play players refuse to learn any, and then can't figure out why their improvising is so hit ands miss and stagnant.

He understands the theory, but shapes are about executing on the knowledge. A particular scale or chord, of any type, is equally a shape as well as maintains a function in the harmony.

@@openrealm With respect, He may understand some degree of Theory now (2014), but I know for a fact he did not when this vid was made. I know that because he said several times in the early and mid 80's that theory was something he had just then decided to start to study. It's also made obvious when he invents non existent scale names for long understood scales. Also, if someone knows the theory, not only do they see and understand the "shapes" of them, but also what all their options are in any given key and progression. Like Rhoads did. This said with no disrespect to George or you.)

@@Ace96x10 I just started to learn how to play, I'm an old man now, but I'm trying. I had Zero knowledge of the guitar much less music theory, but I can see how it greatly helps. Honestly, I think the phrase Music theory scares a lot of people away from even trying to learn how to play. Currently I'm just picking up things from YT, but I do start lessons next month. The reason I say people are afraid of Music theroy is, if you look at tutorials, almost ever one says NO music theory involved! lol

@@mathetes7759 Never to late to learn to play indeed! And for sure, I've taught guitar for 25 yrs now, and theory seems to horrify many people heh. There are many many fantastic players who know almost nothing about Theory , and they are still fantastic players. But I sure found it fun and interesting, and it comes in very handy sometimes. Congrats on picking up an instrument, and I hope you have great fun and success with it all)

What is a simple piece of theory that a guitarist can learn that would help their playing?
