Harry Wayne Casey and Rick Finch were just beginners when they wrote and produced George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby". Both had been messing around the studio learning the ropes and recording artists like Betty Wright and Jimmy Bo Horne. They had cut the instrumental track in less than an hour, but realized that the vocals needed someone who could sing in a higher register than either one of them could. Estimating the cost of the session at $15, they now had to find a female vocalist. Fatefully, George entered the studio that day and cut his vocals in two takes. In an inspired move, he sang the song in a falsetto and as if he were in a dream, a counterpoint to the loud and harsh funky music that was currently popular. The song took off in the discos first. George says he was not prepared for the monster hit as he had been performing for audiences of 200 and now could have 5000 - 10,000 people listening to him. The song took seven weeks to reach the top of the Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks bringing disco to the masses in the summer of 1974.

How can one not like disco? Certainly, because of its success, the genre was overexploited, and a lot of horrors ended up coming out. But at its peak, as on this title of George McCrae, it is simply a delight for the ears, as for the whole body, which has the impression of floating in foam. Ecstasy!

This song entered Billboard's top 40 chart at # 40...first week out jumped an incredible 29 notches to # 11 then hit #1 3 rd week in the 40..biggest one week jump in Billboard history....May 74

Greg, I dug up the 70's Edition of the Billboard Charts and can confirm the song entered the chart on June 1, 1974 at #93, #62, #34, #15, #9, #4 and then #1 for the week ending July13, 1974 where it stayed for two weeks. Also, the distinction of the largest jump on the survey belongs to Jeannie C Riley, whose "Harper Valley PTA" entered the chart August 24, 1968 at #81, and was at #7 the following week, an astounding 74 point jump. That song was everywhere and proved Americans loved a good story song!

You are so right, DJDiscoCat, this record captured me in the summer of 1974. I played both sides of the single over and over, side 2 had part 2 with an instrumental verse before the chorus came back in. So I tried to cut the two together on my cassette recorder and made a 5 minute version. Great. And then the album came out with the full 6 minutes, just wonderful

Summer of 1974. I was living in Verona, Italy where my dad was stationed. We spent a month visiting Southern France. Disco music was just starting with Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, Barry Manilow and Barry White, and everyone was Kung Fu Fighting. Great memories. It’s amazing how certain songs just bring back flashbacks.

~ 1974! I will never hear this song and at some point not hear "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me" by Peter Brown being beat matched simultaneously. Thank you for this re-working of the original L.P. version. Honour to our living legends: George McCrae. And Gwen McCrae. "Rockin' Chair" in its own way the next year was just as iconic. Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

I always loved this song, but I never heard this version before. This is another one of those songs where I think the producer should get most of the credit for its success.
