It happens that way alot...George's first love ( a lady) & George felt the same way...but they had roadblocks. Shirlie and Martin are what it looks like when true love strikes you hard from that moment!!!!

You know what’s kinda weird is that at the time Shirlie was Andrew’s girlfriend and someone noted that in the song Freedom the lyrics “ saw your lover with another and she’s making a fool of you” was George’s way of telling Andrew his girlfriend was cheating on him. I mean in the end she made the right choice but it’s ironic.

That is not true at all.... Shirlie was Andrew Ridgleys girlfriend when she was 18 until she was 20. It wasn't until after she had broken up with Andrew that George actually introduced her to Martin Kemp... when she was 22.... So she can't have been cheating on him. Also it was George pushing her to date Martin... why would he push her to date Martin and then write a song saying that she was cheating on him with Martin. Makes no sense.

That’s not true…George & Shirlie went out together for a meal and saw Andrew with another girl. George & Shirlie left quickly. That’s the kind of man George was. Then Shirlie met Martin Kemp and he gave her his phone number. Shirlie was too nervous to call Martin, so while they were at George’s house practicing dance routines, George got Shirlie to go into his sister’s room to call Martin. George dialed the number and handed the phone to Shirlie. She & Martin agreed to meet at the Camden Palace, and Shirlie was still so nervous, she brought George with her. That is all documented through interviews with Shirlie, George and Martin. Shirlie did not cheat on Andrew. It was Andrew who cheated on Shirlie.

Maybe George was singing to Shirlie, but it’s conflicting because Martin stated in his bio that he and Shirlie had to be careful because she was dating someone in her band, so that’s why I thought the lyrics were for Andrew. So I’m confused. But it worked out for the best.
