When I heard for the first time I Can't Make You Love Me by George Michel, I thought it was a composition of him. It was so heart felt, so authentic, that it should be personal. But I discovered that was written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin many years ago. I search and found other versions of the song, by great singers, Kenny Rogers, Prince, Adele and others. Despite this, none of the interpretations comes close to George Michel's. Of course, it's my personal preference. The way he offers this song and how he pours out his heart through it, how he sung that all the lyrics got meaning, is unmatched. This orchestration, the instruments, his voice and all around makes this song flawless. I can hear it in a loop, all day long. For me it's like a model of how a singer sings a song at best, like an actor who gives to a role a best interpretation. The song grabs the essence of love, that love is a matter of choice, not feelings or emotions and needs freedom. Without freedom there is no real love. When the choice is not the desired one, there is sadness, of course. This is what George expressed so well with the song, the pain of a rejected love.

Just amazing what George could do with a song. I feel he was the best at what he did. His ability to make a song his own. When he song The Long And Winding Road at a charity for Linda McCartney a cancer charity event. He just had so much emotional pain in his voice since his mother had already passed away from cancer as well. He said his mother was at this MTV Live proformance and he hit every note during that proformances. His mother passed 3months later. Love and miss you beautiful soul. Mr.George Michael RIP 🙏

He absolutely adored his mother Patricia - it's heartbreaking - so many of these artists fall apart when their mother's pass - George, Alexander McQueen, Kayne West (e's never been the same...such a shame) Elton and so on and so forth. I vaguely remember George asking I think her name was Maureen, but I need to dig more, to marry him, this is before he came out as he adored her, a bit like Freddie Mercury and Mary. God you NAILED IT with the difference between "singing a song" and really "conveying the emotion in a song." SO well put. George was one of the best singers we had because he was so good at the latter. I love your reactions and I'm glad you react to so many songs from George because he really was a special unique talent and a beautiful soul. It makes me sad too that he often felt so lonely and suffered from depression in his life. Even here you can see in this video, he is surrounded by musicians and backup singers he has known for years who love him, and an audience that adores him, and yet he seems so lonely and isolated like he's still somehow separate from the rest of the room, on an island by himself, lost in the song, and unable to really feel that love that everyone is giving him. It makes me so sad for him and for all of us who know that feeling. 😢 🙏

I loved your commentary on this. I'm hard-pressed to choose a favourite cover that George did, but two (non Stevie Wonder ones as I always think of those as in a class of their own as George's voice was made for Stevie's music as much as it was his own) that go up against this one are his version of Elton John's Tonight and his version of Terence Trent D'Arby's Let Her Down Easy. Both utterly sublime songs by the original artists, but as he tended to do, George managed to turn it up a few notches when he did his bit... PS One of my gorgeous kitties is called Psyche!

I can't comment on that as I don't know, but it was a real shame as he could have been one of those at the top too. He has a totally different voice and overall sound to George, but his songs are incredible and he does a lot of the same type of work in his music, with the commentary ramped all the way up. Although I think his first song came out about 5 years ago I only discovered him last year, and I have the wonder of KZbin to thank for that.

I have to stick to very popular tracks as I have to get my numbers up or I have to start from scratch on he 19th May. I have to get 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time to get into the YT programme, though there is no guarantee - it would literally destroy me if I had to start from scratch as this is a very difficult job with so many rules etc - but I love it and I meet good people like yourself. Once I pass the finish line then I have more room to play more obscure artists. You are so, SO right! You can tell when a performer is actually feeling what they are singing as opposed to just singing the words, and only the best singer can make you feel that same feeling. George did that with this song. I feel similarly about I Will Always Love you. Whitney Houston did a good job of belting that song, but it always felt hollow to me. The emotion that drips from every word when Dolly Parton sings it is what makes it so beautiful and relatable.

Hi M - I absolutely agree with you. "I Will Always Love You" is an interesting example - to me, it's a bit like a 'Coin' - Dolly was Heads, and Whitney was Tales, but together it worked. Dolly's version was more heartfelt because I think she wrote the song about leaving the show she did with Porter Wagoner, which was HUGE at the time, so it was more about her personal/working relationship, rather than a romantic one, but they were very close and it was a big severance for both of them and their careers moving forward. Whitney came in and brought the song up-to-date which was good as most people had never heard it from the generation of when she sang it, plus she made a bucket load of money for herself, the Film The Bodyguard and of course Dolly, as it was her song. - So all in all - it made a wholesome coin and nicely rounded.
