The reason why this works is because George stole this beat from the cure originally.

IMHO, I feel George Michael for this song has influences from Rockabilly and Bo Diddley stylings. Listen to some Bo Diddley songs and you will hear the similarities. Even the Cure's "Close To Me" has similar Bo Diddley rhythm from the bass line.

@@FTech2nd Name any other song with the Bo Diddley beat that fits better and more seamlessly with the Cure's "Close to Me" than George Michael's "Faith". Both even have that similarly breathy vocal phrasing and sound like they're in the same key.
