He goes on at the start that people cannot define neo-liberalism ... but that is not unusual. One of the main tactics involved in keeping people apolitical is to make political discourse almost impossible. The classic example is how to short out any political criticism by labelling it socialist -> communist -> terrorist etc. Who argues about neo-liberalism. But, Monbiot's best comment so far is that we are facing a deliberate and coherent system, and the only thing that is going to supplant that is another deliberate and coherent system. Somehow the Left just thinks its enough to whine, yell, demonstrate or just be right. It's not. It is in organization, money and logistics that the right is so far ahead.

really enjoyed the video, particuarly the Q&A section at end. I agree that the big issue is there is no viable alternative now, and that is the issue... i do think the global and technical revolution we are currently in is a major factor though for going against neo liberalism... industry now can feasibly be housed anywhere... so to go against the markets desire results in potential mass exodus of the industries to someone more favourable to them... i think a big issue is distance... i am reminded of the Milgram experiments... it shows people arent evil or do bad things because they enjoy it.. but will do horrific acts because of distance and so lack of empathy to the suffering subject... it also shows that paradigms of morality can be created by the peer group you are most empathetic to. any solution therefore needs the political and journalist elite and those execs making decisions to be in close promixty and see the actions and affecting result yo the main populace... after all for profit to have a concience and accountability one must have closeness and feel empathy of the people it affects. In this regard i think globalisation and the technological revolution has a greater impact, as it has allowed distance and so affect of actions for profit. a classic exampleis how the business world sees its employees as simple resource now to be moved, used and abused with no empathy of those actions. I am desperate to hear the new alternative you alluded to... i am disappointed it cant be said yet... as surely any model or idea needs to be widely discussed as early as possible, and to be honest any idea kept secret and not open to early discussion rather points to it not being robust and probably flawed.... still i am excited in march to find out what is.

Basically, doesn't the status quo of society and government militate to the conspiracy against the average person by the few people who rationalize that they are superior because they have money, or power or fame? This is simple math and topology, geometry and networking theory. I wish more average people understood math and sciences. If we really wanted to change things we would stop commercial TV and start pushing college education over the airwaves and internet ... but we only can allow those things in limited doses for profit otherwise that elitist topology is defeated, and that is why the conspiracy is needed.

I agree with that, and they have fucked up the entire planet.

So, if we're in a "Neo-liberal' era, why the social housing, socialized medicine, socialized education, food stamps, etc, etc. The market seems powerless in these areas...and, it leads to significant failures such as horrible housing for the poor, healthcare apartheid, segregated schools, obese poor classes, etc, etc. Talk to anyone getting a paycheck who earns over $100,000....doesn't look like a small govt to them.
