Since a lot of subscribers of this channel are WoT fans, it is also interesting to point out there are two very clear shout-out s for Jordan and WoT in ASOIAF 1. There is a house in Dorne named House Jordayne of Tor, whose sigil is golden quill, and whose lord is Lord Trebor Jordayne. Where Trebor is just reading Jorden from right to left. (In The Storm of Sword) 2. There is an Archmaester named Rigney ( Where Rigney being taken from Jorden's real name James Oliver Rigney Jr.) who wrote "history is a wheel, for the nature of man is fundamentally unchanging. What has happened before will perforce happen again" ( mentioned in A Feast for Crows)

I hate how a lot of critics claim GRRM simply kills off characters for shock value. If you paid attention when reading, or have read his books multiple times, you'll find out that GRRM builds towards a "main character's" death for a very long time. For instance, Jon's assassination in the Mutiny at Castle Black is heavily foreshadowed by Melisandre's visions, Jon constantly distancing and angering others in the Night's Watch - including his closest friends, etc. For the Red Wedding... At least 2 chapters preceding the event has a somber funeral-esque tone to it. With Cat emphasizing the importance of Guest Rights, and the importance of Robb keeping his Direwolf close by, it almost feels like GRRM is shouting something important is about to happen. The only "twist" that George has is that he doesn't provide any of his characters with a plot armor (something that Sanderson does too much in SA, imo). If a character is facing a life threatening situation, he doesn't magically get rescued by another character with impeccable timing. Instead, George let's the natural course follow.

I agree with you Daniel, GRRM should be allowed to finish his work at his own pace, leave him alone. That said, it has been 7 years since his last book was released, and given that he's 70 already, it's not inconceivable that he'd be pushing 80 by the time he nears the end of his magnum opus. And he's in the zone now where, god forbid, it's not inconceivable he might perish before then. That is starting to worry me.
@aaronsande

Yeah 7 years is too much, that's just bullshit. Daniel is being way too kind. Sanderson does 7 books in a year, but Martin can do 1 book in 7? Nope. He's got no idea, he was totally lost, the tv series saved him. I won't finish his books. Too late. The show did, he lost me.

I agree that writing a book is an art but I once heard from a writer that one of the best tactics is to make a plan and then adapt it to creativity as it comes. And then sort your way through it using editing techniques first drafts second drafts and third drafts. I don't blame George RR Martin for taking such a long time to write a book. I am just worried that he'll never finish the story. This would be a tragedy to the epic fantasy of of The song of ice and fire series and honestly I don't think anyone else could do it like he does.

There's a big spectrum between writers who plan their stories and writers who set their narrative on the fly, most writers have a method that fits both but there's writers who cant create anything captivating by meticulously planning every detail, while others writing shines through meticulous planning and can't make anything worthwhile on writing on the fly.

I think the influence of superhero comics on Martin are abundantly clear, especially in asoiaf. Any time the theme of knighthood pops up, just switch that out for heroism, it’s the same thing. I also don’t think asoiaf is grimdark. Game of thrones is grimdark. Asoiaf can get grim and dark. But It’s ultimately the meeting point of fantastical romanticism and brutal realism.
@tomswiftyphilo2504
@tomswiftyphilo2504 4 жыл бұрын
"grimdark" is a fair description of GRRM. The setting is so light and beautiful, with thick woods and towering cities of glass and so on like in other fantasy works... but then there's the taking of hands, the sexual assault, the selling young women into marriage-slavery... it's an ugly urban fantasy plot in a beautiful high fantasy setting.

If it takes just as long or longer to get the last book out. But for me the issue is he’s not just writing winds. He’s written multiple side stories and books in the ASOIAF universe and even separate books . Time spent on those could be used to write winds. It’s like if Tolkien was writing the silmerilion before or during the return of the king. The silmarilions great but the story of the lord of the rings would be unfinished while Time was spent on the other work. Yes he’s still working on winds but time spent on other works is time George could spend on winds.

I won't harass him for not finishing the books, but I won't praise him as a genius (NOT denying his influence, important difference) before seeing it finished, as long a he refuses to hand it over/let someone edit it together later. After all, everyone can tie a complicated knot given enough string, untying it without having to cut the rope is something different. The interview on his writing speed, "I don't know how I managed to write as fast and doubt I will ever be able to again" gives away a lot, and to me at least, not so positively. The problem is simple: there were less plot threads, characters not yet as clearly defined and less framework/canon/lore to be considered (also no show backlash that might require changes). So far so natural, nothing to critique about that, but the fact that he isn't aware of that really baffles me.

About the influence of Marvel Comics in GRRM style; I'd just have two things to say. First, his first "published" work (I say this jokingly) is a letter fan published in an early issue of Fantastic Four comics. Second, and more seriously, he was (and still is, I think) the editor and co-author of Wildcards, a series about super-heroes writtent by various authors. Another thing that has nothing to do with what I said before. The best joke about authors being slow to write (and you're right, none should rush art) was about Patrick Rothfuss when he was playing DnD in a Pax East convention (the Acquisition Incorporated games). At some point the DM (Chrsi Perkins) was reading a riddle that the players had to solve and they were all scrambling to write it down. At that point, Patrick Rothfuss says "I'm not good at this" to which another player says "At what ? Writing quickly ?" with the toothiest grin I've ever seen. Obviously, everyone (M.Rothfuss included) bursted out laughing.

In fairness, I agree that authors should not be harassed. That being said, I read GoT when my daughter was still in diapers and learning to walk. Daniel, she's in grad school now. Holy Writer's Block, Batman! So, yeah, I think it's fair for there to be some pressure on the guy to just get it done in order to try to prevent things like Season 8 of the HBO series from occurring (oops, too late). I understand burnout and needing to step away but I have to reiterate, my daughter is working on her Master's Degree. I think it's okay for George to knuckle down and get the thing done. As to the anti-fantasy elements of A Song of Ice and Fire, I always saw that as a juxtaposition of what was to come. The starting point was a bit of a giveaway. Winter was coming and a lot of ancient magic was going to slowly start creeping back into the picture and move everything towards a grim sort of high fantasy despite the best efforts of some of the worst people to keep things firmly ground in regular, nasty glum reality. I was really looking forward to that transition. I was kind of hoping it wouldn't take DECADES for what was originally envisioned as a 5-book series to still not have come full circle (no, the TV show doesn't entirely count because Season 8 desperately needs to be redone).

I think I see the Stan Lee influence in A Song of Ice and Fire. Both, all the works of Stan Lee and that series have the same question at their center: What is a hero? Why is it that the imp is a hero but not the man who took the iron throne and sat there at the beginning of the series. How is it that we count a man who pushed a kid off a tower among the heroes of the series currently? Similar questions can be asked of characters in the Marvel universe. And the questions beg to be asked in both works. Also juxtapositions of the villains with the heroes tend to be handled with great care and the differences between each hero and each villain. It all seems to serve the purpose of getting to the core of what a hero is.

To be honest, now that GOT is finished with quite an unsatisfying ending for much of its audience, I think that the next ASOIAF book is only like 1-2 years downstream. I kind of agree with Daniel a while back when he said in a video something upon the lines of GRRM waiting until GOT to be done so he could present his own ending (I don't think this is exact paraphrase to what Daniel said, but close). And I also think that the publisher will soon start pressuring GRRM to finish the series soon. Now that GOT is finished with discontent, the publisher might see great benefit to publishing the story quick enough to capture the would-be high demand before the majority of people move one from GOT/ASOIAF. (Btw, GOT = the Game of Thrones show; ASOIAF = the A Song of Ice and Fire book series.) Edit: Oh and I also agree, "art cannot be rushed," but I also want to add that GRRM could also bee facing some writers block as the longer he "delays" (for the lack of a better word) the higher the expectation we might have, at least in his opinion, and therefore writing the books might mean that he has to "try" harder to get to the same level of creativity and to try to match the expectation of his audience, which might or might not be there (\__(-.-)__/). I hope all of this makes sense.

Tone - kinda similar - dark irony, explicit dialogue, and puzzle plots but each book is VERY different. Fevre is more historical, "realistic." Sandkings and NF I would regard as speculative/sci-fi - exploring a world or issue.

I haven‘t read anything by Martin yet. I plan to read ASOIAF eventually, but it‘s not going to happen in quite a while. I also haven‘t seen the show. At the moment Martin‘s status of being THE current master of fantasy annoys me. The majority of the adult fantasy books on my shelves have either a quote by him of someone comparing the book to his works on the cover or back. I think it‘s the most repeated author Name on my shelve and I Don,t even own one of his books.

Ive read everything up to this point and wouldn’t be able to reread it. I have different standards then I used to and can’t stand how poorly paced the main arc is now. It takes so long for anything regarding the Others to happen or be revealed. Too many sideplots that take too long to progress as well. It’s just completely boring for long periods, especially books 4 and 5.

An author shouldn't be harassed. But every entrance into an incomplete series is a promise to deliver a conclusion to the story, and that's a promise Martin hasn't upheld. People have passed on waiting to read the conclusion to the series. And Martin isn't keeping himself in good health. The least he could do is eat a salad and exercise.

@@ABLEARC except I have no personal stake if he ever finishes the book. Most authors understand the promise of a series of books. Brandon Sanderson for example Authors have deadlines for a reason, and Martin has always missed his. Meanwhile, he focuses his attention on interviews and other projects. If he dies before completing the books (and be honest, that is a very real possibility) I'll just shrug without an ounce of sympathy for any lack of fulfillment he has from not completing his work. Robert Jordan continued working on his book while he was dying of cancer, and even made sure they could be completed in his absence. I honestly just think he's selfish, and ungrateful to his fans, which I am not one of.

@@hsdurfee You buy that book, you pay for that book and only that book. You don't pay for the next and no author has the obbligation of writing more. It's a risk we all take when buying a book that's part of a serie. That every entry is a promise is bullshit.

He's also a profoundly known liar. If you actually ARE a fan of the things he says he's a fan of, you will know that he's a salesman. His POWER as a "creator" is exclusive TSoIaF, he had "Wildcards" which was a derivative, damn near plagiaristic concept, to which he contributed a grand total of 5 stories to, in a compendium of about a hundred if not more. George, was a editorial con man, with a brilliant concept that he decided to write TSoIaF and became a brilliant author. NOW, there is a phrase that everyone has one book in them, I think George proves it, because he doesn't know how to complete his first book in any way.
