Not surprised Wyler's name was touted to direct this, it's very much the sort of film Wyler excelled at making. George Stevens done a terrific job though.

Hattie McDaniel was hysterical in this film...!!

Yes. Unlike her propriety-martinet Mammy character in the film Gone with the Wind, here her maid-cook-for-the-evening could not care less if anything (emblematically here, her cap) "ain't fitting!"

I see nothing funny about how they had the maid acting. Shuffling around like that.

She was not a regular maid at this decliningly middle class house, but a cook hired for one unexpectedly sweltering hot summer evening to serve one dinner, wearing a maid lace cap at the pretentious Kate Hepburn character's behest to impress her rich beau dinner guest so that he would propose marriage to her. In the film, which ends happily for her, he does, and this scene becomes a comedy of manners of errors. But in the more realistic Booth Tarkington 1922 novel, the scene's culinary and social faux pas series results in Alice's staying single and having to get a secretarial job. Hattie is indifferent to the outcome of this scene, as it is a one time paid gig for which her hirer had failed properly to fit her for the cap. So her function here is as an at best bemused Greek chorus onlooker and tacit commenter upon the unfolding fiasco. By contrast, the spirited, take charge Mammy Hattie would play three years later in Gone With the Wind had raised her white female charge from birth, was emotionally invested in her fortunes, and was intendedly a permanent pillar of the household staff.

@@JudgeJulieLit And Hattie McDaniel's timing, her walk etc. are comic gold. Just watch her with the brussels sprout! She knows exactly what she is doing here and the Adams Family are the butt of the joke, not her.

@@poetcomic1 Indeed. Her deliberately slowed table service, eye rolls, satirically subtlely saboteur indifference to the slip of her ruffled cap on her hair, in Alice's dinner fete audition to become rich new date Fred MacMurray's fiancee, slyly yet under~the~radar lampoon it.

@@JudgeJulieLit Very well said,a shame very few actually read Booth Tarkington's book(which is brilliant)he's such an incredible writer and it's a shame his novels are not as highly desirable as they should be,he was a genius.
