David Manners was handsome as hell. Manners quit acting in 1936 and became a novelist and a philosophist. He spent the next 30 years living with his boyfriend, (a playwright) Frederic William Mercer, who died in 1978. Manners died in 1998 at the age of 98. Impressive!

Hepburn in her first big role, breathtaking and beautiful. As Cukor said when interviewed about this film, no one ever saw anything like her. Heartbreaking to watch, but in the end I understood the sacrifice & the emotion I felt.

That opening scene of young lovelies and gentlemen dancing is heaven. Oh, how I wish life were like that today! Sadly, young people are not taught and do not know how to dance ballroom style. In my day, girls and boys went to dancing class after school. We all wore white gloves. That was back when there were only 2 sexes and none of the current woke nonsense.

White gloves and dancing class were only for the wealthy. The poor had it harder then than now. It is easy to look back on the past with romantic nostalgia and forget life was not like that for most.

What are u talking about? This movie was made in 1932 during the Great Depression the majority of people didn't wear gloves nor had ball room dance classes after school they were literally starving. Many families would set up tents outside because they lost their house. This is nothing but a movie it doesn't reflect the actual 30s educate yourself please.

Great movie! Thanks for downloading. Besides the stellar cast, the story line reflected the attitudes and subsequent understanding of PTSD then, a leftover from European backyard sheds where "lunatic" family members were sometimes chained. We have come a long way in compassion for one another. It's too bad Sidney didn't marry her lover and have lots of children! I loved the movie. Beautiful sets and costumes too. Oddly enough, I think taking ultimate responsibility for our actions is the theme in this movie. The resolution was it's flaw imo.

This was a wonderful film. But to see Billie Burke portray a serious character for an entire film is unusual. I think that is what I liked best about "A Bill of Divorcement."

Toward the latter years of his greatest appeal, The Great Profile was prolific in making movies at various studios. Katharine Hepburn provides support in this film, months away from her breakthrough in "Morning Glory". Billie Burke and David Manners were also established stars borrowed for the movie.

Hilary Fairfield ( John Barrymore) returns home after fifteen years in a mental asylum. However, he finds things are not the way they were when he left! His wife has divorced him and is already planning her next marriage and his daughter has grown up throughout the years and is planning to marry as well! This was Ms Hepburn’s film debut! And she does it well- but Mr Barrymore and Ms Burke carry the show to its emotional conclusion! They did a remake of the movie 🍿 in 1940 with Maureen O’Hara, adolphe menjou and fay bainter in the roles played by the original actors! Great movie! 👀😮😮😮🥲🥲🥲🩷💙🩷

The camera loved Barrymore. Even though he over-egged the acting pudding from time to time (thinking he was still in the theater) he looked so good and was wonderful for Hawks in 'Twentieth Century".
@valkyriesardo278 Жыл бұрын
I have never understood why Barrymore had a reputation for great talent. Perhaps he was more impressive on a theater stage than on a movie screen.
@gloriamontgomery6900 Жыл бұрын
Some of it may have been his great originality . He made some revolutionary choices when he played Hamlet. I agree with you in that he wasn’t necessarily much better than, say Olivier or Gielgood. His performance as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet with Norma Shearer was really wonderful. He captured the dark wit of the character beautifully
@errolpletcher9186 Жыл бұрын
He honed his acting skills in the silent era so his style of emoting comes across as dated. Norma Shearer is another one whose acting never graduated from the silent pictures.

@MK+hh1vo Only just started movie but oh believe me, they can be whatever you're speaking of portrayed here and worse. I'm only one of the surviving products of a screwed up head case of a mom and autistic father who were forced to marry upon finding themselves expecting at 15 and 17. And that was only in 64. Said mom's unwanted arrival was in '48 from a single mom born in 1918 to a father who'd divorced her mom after cheating when she was very very little. These stupid blood filled parts between our legs have caused very little but pain and suffering and mental stress and ill gotten or attempted gains and more often than not, the resulting children suffered.

Dreadful picture. Dead on arrival. A wax museum of obsolete, discredited, "actor-y" acting styles, and poorly directed to boot. Flatters none of its illustrious performers. Hepburn comes off the best. John Barrymore's film appearances are an enigma considering his exalted reputation as an actor, and his big scene here is as phony as the miscast (because her real strength was comedy of manners) Billie Burke's "reactions". I could dry my laundry on a clothesline in the spaces between line deliveries in this turkey. Barrymore's out-of-sync pantomime of playing the piano at the end is especially ludicrous (his brother Lionel, who was a real amateur pianist, could have done it much better). Max Steiner retooled the piano theme he created here in one of his later pictures for Warner Brothers, possibly City for Conquest. My only bravo is for the scenic design.
