Probably the only time Washington acted like Washington in the entire game, and it’s at the tail end of a DLC where he was a tyrannical despot.

From what I understand, this is basically a real conversation that Washington had with one of his subordinates. After the war was over, Col. Lewis Nichola assumed that Washington (being so beloved by his men) would turn his guns onto Philadelphia and take over the government. Washington not only responded by saying no, he demanded that anyone discussing the matter “banish these thoughts from your mind”. It was a pretty harsh rejection too. Apparently Washington was furious at even the assumption that he might declare himself a king.

Washington was called the "American Cincinnatus" for a reason (also part of the reason why Cincinnati is named as such today, after the Cincinnatus Society IIRC). He didn't want to lead the United States. After the war, he wanted to return to his plantation and live out his days in retirement. Yet, he humbly accepted the offer of running for president after refusing it multiple times, as the Founders believed he was the sole unifying figure that the entire nation could rally around (there were others like Jefferson, Adams, and Hancock that were popular, but all of them were certainly more divided into political/regional lines). And as president, he could've done anything. The Constitution was written and ratified, sure, but the POWER of the presidency was certainly in question. At the end of the day, the Constitution is something that only works if the nation agrees that it works. He could've radically shaped the presidency to be much different, a dictatorial one more akin to a monarch rather than a public servant. But he limited himself and established the modern etiquette and expectations of the president. He wasn't perfect by any means; he frequently clashed with members of Congress, especially over the Jay's Treaty. Nor was he completely beloved (the public burned effigies of Washington on a few occasions). But he was principled, humble, and, more importantly, detached from the corruption that normally comes with power. We can only see the power creep that came after he left office. Heck, even Jefferson, a self-proclaimed "small government" man, greatly expanded the powers of the presidency far beyond what even Washington established. So much to the point where Washington's own decision to limit himself to two terms became defacto law until FDR. The Cabinet still exists today (this was created by Washington and is not ordained in the Constitution specifically). He governed with a firm hand, but a detached one. Some modern interpretations today state that Washington wasn't as humble as he may have acted in public. I can't say with confidence if that is true, but I do imagine there is a kernel of truth to those assumptions. Regardless, his actions speak for him, and they show a man who was willing to step down peacefully and placed limits on himself for the good of the nation (so that one man wouldn't rule for decades on end). We should look back to his dedication and service to his country, especially during volatile times like now. No man is above the law. The United States fought for the right of the people to govern their own nation. The president is no monarch; he is a public servant. At least, he should be like one.

Makes you wonder how the Supreme Court could possibly come to their recent decision that the President should be immune from prosecution. That’s not in the Constitution and there’s a reason for that, it makes no sense that America would rebel against one monarchy just to enact another. And it shames the legacy of men like George Washington who willingly conceded power, and would have been appalled by the idea of anyone, least of all someone in such an honored position as President, being declared to be above the law. That’s not what America has ever stood for.

You don't get writtng like this in an AC game anymore. I know AC3 wasn't a well liked game, but it had moments like this that are so profound, especially when you know how troubled Our first presidents life was. Because, he could have had it all. He could have been like Robespierre or Dessalines or Santa Ana. He could have been a dictator and no one could stop him. Certainly he could have made himself rich of the revolution like Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson did post war of independence. Instead he was forced into the presidency by a popular vote in congress. He served two terms and returned home, where he died penniless and alone on a return trip from Philadelphia. And AC makes him seem more noble because he knew. He saw the vision same as connor did. Had he taken the apple he could have been king. He saw what it would bring, and connor wouldn't be around to stop him in the "real" world. And he chose not to take the apple. Not even Altiar, the greatest assassin, could do that.

From a narrative perspective, I would argue that AC3 is the strongest in the franchise. The themes of power, corruption, and freedom are so well integrated into the historical setting. The American Revolution is such a perfect time period for an Assassins Creed story.

This is a great scene. That was my biggest complaint in AC3. They did not use Washington properly in the story and also, they created a ridiculous reason for Connor to hate him. In reality, Washington did not burn down the Native American villages in the intro. He wasn’t even in command in 1761. He was at his house. I wish we had more awesome moments like this and to be able to team up with Washington on the battlefield.

Yes The game didn’t say that Washington burns down the village with his own bare hands but the story says that he gave the order during the 7 years war(the “big” reveal from Haytham). However, like I said in this comment he wasn’t even in command during that year(1761) and on top of that, if I recall correctly, Connors village/tribe(similar to the Mohawks) was one of the allies of the British army during the seven years war. So OK why would the British(Washington) attack one of their own allied tribes? So, like I said, Ubisoft is lazy when it came to story writing, and gameplay for the patriots of the American revolution(including the false advertising). They put more effort into the historical characters for the renaissance and the golden age of piracy. It’s painfully obvious that Ubisoft had a bit of a anti-American agenda here. I’m not saying we shouldn’t show the flaws of the American patriots but at least be more accurate to the flaws, give more memorable interactions with these historical characters(similar to past games), show more of the heroic deeds during the American revolution(alongside Connor of course) & obviously don’t lie about these historical figures just to make them look bad. I mean, do you really think Washington would just sit back and let Haytham talk trash like that? I mean I could go on and on but this text is long enough

In fairness, sometimes a state is so chaotic and unstable that a strong and ruthless hand is required to lead it. Look at so many of these countries trying democracy only to fall into anarchy. I think some cultures and states simply aren't ready to harness the power of the people, and that's why puppet governments fail so often. Additionally when you force democracy into a state they tend to not like it, as we've seen in the 90s-10s in the middle east and south america.

Much though I love this portrayal and the Mythology of Columbia that forms The United States' spiritual spine, it's evident that Washington was _WRONG_ for having believed in the Republic over monarchy. The Elite have always controlled humanity, from tribal chieftains when Man subsisted in the shadows of the campfire to the shadowy oligarchs pull the strings of the America's and European Union's elected officials, opposed by autocratic strongmen like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. Human beings have power over themselves and are not fated to servitude. This is because all humans are essentially the same; there isn't a distinct breed of Leader human and Slave human. Thus the emergence of elite castes (monarchies, bourgeois) are merely historical accidents, not inevitable consequences of biology. Some humans act as leaders. This means all human beings have the capacity for self-governance. Therefore for every person there is a meaningful choice between submitting to authority and self-determination. This scales up to widescale groups. We know this because there have been non-hierarchical, non-authoritarian human groups in our history. In light of this, opting for one particular flavour of authority over another - autocracy over oligarchy - is like picking between two flavours of poison, when a clean glass of water is on the table besides you. A better world is possible. And an inability to accept this indicates a weakness of imagination.

I mean I'd suspect most would. The Atlantic accent was pretty prominent really up until the 1940s. The 1770s were also before tens of millions of immigrants during the 19th century

Yes. Most Americans in the Colonies were really just British immigrants and colonists who settled in America for centuries. So they definitely would’ve had a British accent
