We regularly give Patrons the opportunity to ask Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli their mysterious questions and make them available exclusively to Patrons first and then later to the whole audience. This time the questions cover George Washington's reported vision of the Virgin Mary; whether demons can reveal your confessed sins; the Taotaomo'na spirits from Guam; and more.

No, for two reasons. First, based on his content in the past, it is a fair assumption that you will indeed like it therefore liking it is a vote of confidence in Jimmy Akin’s content. Second, if you didn’t end up liking the episode, which is unlikely. Then you can always click like button again, taking back your like. Example through analogy if I’m walking down the street, I see an old friend. And I say good to see you, buddy. And that person turns out not to be my old friend. sorry, I thought you were my old buddy. My excitement was genuine and so was my disappointment .

I'm a teacher, and I appreciate the time and effort it takes to create lesson plans. I also understand what's involved with moving back to your home state and setting up house. So I don't mind missing out on the viewer feedback as you settle in. I do, however, find viewer feedback interesting, so perhaps it can be an annual thing, perhaps as an anniversary special.

Re the rent vs mortgage/interest discussion, when you have a mortgage, you also aren't at the mercy of rent hikes. In my city, for example, rents have gone so high that my mortgage (for a similar if not larger property) is lower than most people's rent.

My parents helped my wife and I put a down payment on a house instead of helping us get an extravagant honeymoon. We bought at a point when interest rates were at historic lows and the prices were at historic lows. Six years later, because of medical bills, we were struggling to make ends meet. We looked into selling our three bedroom and moving into a one bedroom apartment, except our mortgage was $500 per month and rent on a studio apartment was $520 per month. I have no doubt at all that we were money ahead paying a mortgage than renting.

He's wrong though, opportunity cost isn't a real good, it can't actually be sold. Full recourse loans for consumption with interest are a moral hazard where the borrower bears all the risk whereas the lender's profits are guaranteed (while they do no work). The classical understanding of usury is correct, and usurious loans are both socially and economically destructive. Besides the devastation it wreaks on lower classes who drown in debt, the macroeconomic effect is even worse. The US spends more on the interest payments for its debts than on defense - when the debts become too expensive to service the effect will be catastrophic.

@@JohnSmith-yr1dc Having use of the money NOW instead of later is indeed a very real good/service, as any person (even a child) can understand and already knows. How can you deny that? Whether the lender gets all his money back at all (let alone a profit) is a separate issue, but I don't believe there is any guarantee at all anywhere that that will happen, even if such laws did exist. I'm no expert, but I believe filing for bankruptcy is one way the lender can be prevented from recovering his loss. lol, without loans, many people could not afford cars, houses, businesses, etc., things that are absolutely not destructive but quite the opposite. Yes, it is true that many people have indeed destroyed themselves in their choices to take on too much debt or certain kinds of debt and that the US govt has been on a course of economic self-destruction, but just because something can be abused or is even uniquely tempting to abuse (money, sex, firearms, alcohol, TV, internet, etc.) does not make it inherently evil.

The St. Joseph day table was such a staple of my childhood that I didn't even realize until a couple years ago that it was controversial to some and unknown to even a lot of other Catholics. I've recently found out that even a good portion of the parishes around me don't participate when an Italian-American FB page I'm on posted a list of all the St. Joseph Day tables and pasta dinners happening in the city and it was less than 10.

I’m not surprised. The world is pretty big and people have all sorts of ways of celebrating. A St. Joseph’s Day table sounds pretty cool to me 😁 I’m sure there’s lots of little community and local traditions that still happen but are unknown, and many that have fallen away from disuse or been ‘updated’ over time. Would be cool to see a complete list of that kind of stuff, though probably a very time consuming endeavor.

@jendoe9436 Yeah. It's always crazy to step outside of our own traditions and realize how many different things are out there. They are very cool. If there's ever one by you I definitely recommend stopping in. The tables are so beautiful and it's usually an opportunity to raise money to feed people struggling in the community. So any money spent on a dinner or baked goods is well spent.

We make a St. Joseph's altar down here. We have big parades in New Orleans. It's always an Irish/Italian event for St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day. If you're lucky, some handsome Italian will hand you a lucky bean, which is a fava bean blessed by a priest. Sometimes, they are painted red, green, and white, and sometimes they are plain. They say if you put it in your kitchen, you’ll never go hungry like the Italians did back then. You also save some of the bread from the altar to throw in your yard when a storm is in the Gulf, asking St. Joseph to protect you and your belongings. We roll out the Cappelletti and also make Cuchidati, which is a cookie made of figs and dates. It's a big holiday down here.

The Word of God is our guide, not Google and Jimmy Akin, but this certainly explains why you are so lost. When you stand before the Lord on judgment day, you will not be able to say you participated in idolatry because Jimmy Akin said it was okay. God gave you a brain in your head and His Word, so you will be held accountable. There's absolutely nothing in scripture about making an altar for Joseph and nothing about him being able to protect you (Romans 1:24).

Handel’s setting of Dixit Dominus, HWV 232, simply sets “Tu es sacerdos..” as a rather exciting fugue. Anything connected with a law , especially if it wasn’t especially inspiring and didn’t call to mind anything more obvious, usually got a fugue - Bach used one for “Wir haben ein Gesetzt” (we have a law, and by that law He must die) in the St. John Passion.

The issue with that is they started with the wrong circumference of the Earth, so the meter is as just an arbitrary unit of length as the foot. Of course, now they have ret-conned the definition of meter to be based on the speed of light in a vacuum under the gravitational attraction experienced on Earth. However, even the meter being based on a random distance is still more scientific than the kilogram, which, up until relatively recently, was defined as a cylinder of platinum, which would actually change weight as it was handled.

So the devil wouldn't know them for its as if they never existed. Also...if we are NEVER to believe a demon (I agree!) and if they always LIE then why worry what they say even about sins...it could be assumed they are just lying to make us feel embarrassed, guilty, etc.

Regarding paying interest, the swindle is when compound interest is used to charge interest, which charges interest in the interest thereby growing your debt. Usury is the charging of exploitative compound interest which turns into enslavement to the loan. It’s very astute: Compound interest means people are paying interest on the interest. Credit cards calculate interest on a daily basis, and the interest accrued each day is added to the outstanding balance, and the next day's interest is calculated based on this new balance. This is referred to as "daily compounding." For daily compounding, the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is divided by 365. Thus, because of the compounding, if one carries a balance from month to month, they end up paying interest on the interest which only leads to a growing debt, and if a payment is missed or late the penalties are expensive. This same method is used to financially enslave countries, and depleting them of their natural resources, especially the poor countries. Thus John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis, have called on debt forgiveness for these poor countries that have been enslaved by their financial masters; yet those calls always go unheeded.
@JohnSmith-yr1dc
@JohnSmith-yr1dc 2 ай бұрын
Compounding interest is particularly odious, but all usury is poison. Sad that the Church's messaging on this has softened so much - charging interest on full recourse loans for consumption was rightly considered elicit and it destroys whoever embraces it in the long run; whether a natural person, corporation, or government.
@tonyl3762
@tonyl3762 2 ай бұрын
Compounding can either work for you or against you; it's not a one way street. Yes, credit cards are traps for many people to abuse and self-destruct, which is why I've told my children (who aren't even old enough yet to have one) about their dangers/consequences and how I pay off the full balance every month and don't spend more than I can pay off (like my parents taught me). A little education goes a long way. No reason to get laws and governments involved when some basic education is sufficient. So taxpayers of the lending countries should have to carry the _entire_ debt burden that other countries took on? That's fair and just? Should that happen on a smaller scale too? Are you trying to abolish lending altogether? You and the popes have not thought this through very well. Though there's a strong argument to be made that taxpayers who voted for politicians to lend money to such countries in such ways do deserve the consequences of their unwise votes. But then there would be less aid lending to other countries, causing them to struggle. And even the US govt can't keep up the charade of making money out of thin air and piling on trillions of debt forever.

Jimmy's very wrong on Usury, and it's unfortunate to see prominent Catholics like Jimmy, who is usually very discerning, repeating specious arguments like "opportunity cost" to the lender. Opportunity cost, or hypothetical profits, are not real goods that can be sold. Profits that I might have made in alternate circumstances aren't real; the lender may have made a profit with that money, but that also would have entailed work and *risk*. All full recourse loans (where the borrower personally guarantees the principle + interest, rather than the lender having recourse to collateral) are usury, and the classical understanding of them was correct. They're a moral hazard where the lender's profits are guaranteed, and the borrower does all the work while bearing all the risk. Take Jimmy's own example: a loan for starting a business. If the business succeeds and turns a profit then that's great, everybody's happy. But what if the business goes bust (which happens very regularly) and so obliterates both the principle and whatever other assets the borrower sunk into it? Well the borrower isn't happy, he's ruined - but the lender's fine. He's laughing - he owns a perpetual claim on all of the borrower's future labour until the debt + continually accruing interest is repaid! Unequal contracts like this where one party does and risks nothing while the other risks becoming a legal slave is totally contrary to charity, and it's horrible modern Catholics will stand for it. All responsible loans with interesr for industrial development are rightly given with the guarantee being either discrete capital the borrower owns or equity in the enterprise. That way all parties share in both the risks and the potential profits while claims are limited to goods and not to *persons*. The only reason to issue a full recourse loan would be if the lender suspects there's a high chance that the borrower *won't* succeed and they want to still profit without the risk. Which as I said is contrary to charity - "You may fail but you'll pay me either way." And this is all just on the small scale and personal level - it doesn't take into effect the social and macroeconomic effect of usury. Debt is both the ruin of lower classes and leads to asset concentration into the hands of very few rich lenders generally, with all the economic misallocation and social instability monopolies entail. Maybe even worse is government debt from usurious loans - the US government spends more on interest payments on its gargantuan debt than on the already bloated defense budget. This isn't sustainable and will blow up catastrophically eventually. The Church softening its messaging on usury isn't due to a more refined understanding of the phenomenon - It's just another compromise with the spirit of the age and an unwillingness to confront a society's popular vices. It's no different than their softening message on homosexuality, gender roles, and the centrality of Christian Faith in public life. And genuinely faithful people like Jimmy should be the last ones spreading this kind of self-interested talking point around. Even if it were licit in the abstract (it's not) usury is self evidently evil and destructive in practice, its a scourge any faithful Christian should want eradicated.

He did say later in the episode that we should not be the ones to make contact with spirits, but that if one happens to make contact with us scripture tells us to test the spirit. That would necessarily involve communication of some kind. I think he would say that using telepathy, which would be a natural human ability if it even exists, would be an acceptable way of testing a spirit claiming to be a dead person if such a spirit made the contact. However, telepathy would not be okay to use in order to initiate contact with the dead. Incidentally, there would be many sinful ways to use telepathy if one were using it as a means of sinning, for example telepathically lying to someone. It would be the lying that was sinful, though, not the telepathy. The telepathy would just be the tool used to commit the sin. Lying in writing is another way of committing this sin, but that doesn't make all writing sinful. I hope that helps. I wouldn't want you to stop being able to enjoy this wonderful show just because of a misunderstanding.
