No. George literally crossed the Delaware when most of his men couldn't swim, and some of them died, showing that he was a garbage leader. Ironically they won the battle after that journey

The funny thing is, Washington actually WAS a shite tactician, at least when it came to directing the main Continental Army (his plans tended to be too complex with too many moving parts). He generally had much better success in the field when he personally led small, dedicated state militias, but his real strength as a general was his ability to keep the peace between various opposing factions of the Continental Congress who all wanted different things once they got their freedom, and inspire loyalty and moral in the rank-and-file troops even during major setbacks.
@andrewhoward69465 жыл бұрын
Spot on. Washington wasnt AWFUL, but could get out-generaled by the English in a straight fight. His real strength was just keeping his army intact and motivated between fights, and keeping his army from hurting their own side. Not an easy feat when your army doesn't always have food.

The “roll up on a boat, you’re sleeping cut your throat” line had to do with the crossing of the Delaware River in order to attack the Hessian mercenaries, an elite group of soldiers from the region where the Holy Roman Empire had once been, sent by King George. Washington ended up winning the Battle of Trenton(where they fought), a much needed victory for the morale of his army.

Washington really wasn't great as a general. If it wasn't for the French, America would still have been a British colony until the 1940's when they lost their empire, or we might still be a Commonwealth country like Canada to this day. Which...actually wouldn't have been a bad thing, looking back at it. We'd have a health system where people don't have to risk homelessness to get well after a serious illness, and an education system where the tuition for universities is a hell of a lot less than it is now. Also, maybe we wouldn't be quite so addicted to guns as we are now, and may even be just a bit nicer people if we had more influence from Canada.
