I am one of the original school boys of PEPPER MIDDLE SCHOOL. 1974 when it opened!!! I was a starter on the Basketball team & the gymnasium wasn't even built yet. Coach Danowitz was the BBall coach. The school was brand new and awesome. I was in Beta house my 1st year and Gamma house my 2nd. I was there for 7th and 8th grade. The gym was finished two+ years after we all graduated. Great memories...

I grew up on Bonsall Ave in Sharon Hill, just next to the Darby creek. I still loved the look of the building! The art is a bonus, and shows talent of the city there. I hope what's planned comes to fruition!

Retrofitting this fine building to bring it up to 21st century energy conservation standards would be quite a challenge - though not impossible. The big question would be: how to insulate? Nice video - good work

My middle school! Of course when attending, I hated it as far as a student. But it was pretty cool waking the hallways, the lunch hall, the bus ramps, pick up zones. We had 4 different "Houses" back then... 4 sets of "scissor" stairways, Alpha House, Beta House, Gamma, and Delta.

I went there in 1998. I forgot about the houses, but it does bring back vague memories. I think we were "assigned" different houses as means to organize the students. I remember the school being on the dangerous side because the students were from bad areas of Southwest Philly. I lived off of 61st and Woodland Ave. and that area was no joke at all in the 90s.

I just drove by this today on my way to John Heinz. It's a shame, what's become of the school. I love the design, and think it would be a cool place in which to learn/to teach. The design of the building is strangely futuristic, which you remarked was an aspect of the designer's wishes. I don't see this particular building as being ugly or authoritarian as some of the other brutality designs to which you pointed.

To your later points, they could rehabilitate this school as they did the BOK in South Philly. Could be an awesome hub for the neighborhood.
