Enzo has the hardest job in the team, when Chelsea attack and move in formation 3-2-5 Enzo's job is to get into the half space on the left side of the pitch while Palmer gets into the right side half space. When Chelsea loses the ball Enzo has to run all the way back to his own half and get into 4-2-3-1 formation and do defensive work. His lack of pace is the only reason he can't do such a great job transitioning from attack to defense and vice versa but I'm sure he will find his form with this new position and do great. He is still has the best passing abilities in the squad and it's very noticeable when he is not on the pitch how Chelsea can't keep the ball as good!

things Enzo does better than anyone at Chelsea: 1) His positioning and knowledge of where the opp defense is set up and his consequent shifting of the play in the midfield to generate quality attacks. Some of his little sideways passes look simple and innocuous but they are under a lot of pressure, Enzo plays them so casually and with full awareness of what's behind him, many times they lead to the through ball assists from other players 2) His positioning to constantly be available to receive the ball off teammates who are under pressure. 3) Ability to receive of the turn when under pressure 4) His range of passing When all of these qualities were absent from the Bournemouth game, Chelsea looked stagnant in attack.

It's very straight forward in my opinion, When Lavia is available he starts, he's the better footballer, not to mention the profile of player we need more in the team. Enzo has massively underwhelmed since joining, even with ignoring the price tag entirely he is just not adding much to the squad or the first team when he plays, he feels like a huge passenger in the team, definitely not writing him off completely from becoming a player who contributes, but I don't think he will ever become the player the directors thought they were signing or anywhere close, let's put it that way. The more frustrating thing moving forward, is there will undoubtedly be a pressure to start and play Enzo in the team based on the director's vision and investment, I feel the same kind of fans that never stopped believing in Torres & Werner and now Mudryk will constantly argue for his inclusion in the team, but his constant inclusion is going to harm us. I hope the directors wise up to the reality on Enzo and maybe let off the pressure, and allow the coach to pick on merit.

Even thought he seems to want to play higher up the pitch, Enzo just seems like a better distributor from deeper in midfield positions. His first half a season, his passing volume, progressive passing volume and pass completion percentage was much higher. His vision is great when he’s looking up field but he doesn’t look great when he has defenders on his back.

What generally seems to be left out of this discussion is some basic numbers in terms of who defends and who attacks. The norm, used by just about everybody, is a 5-5 split. 5 players generally stay back in a defensive posture, 5 players push forward. And if Enzo is part of the front 5 but literally stops being a useful player the moment we enter the final third then then we effectively only have four attackers for that job. Four attackers against eight defenders? How is that even supposed to work? People seem to gloss over this otherwise fairly obvious issue. I think it is because Enzo is the second CM and a second non-attacking CM in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system is perfectly normal. But in a standard 4-2-3-1 there's going to be at least one offensive fullback. We don't have that. We have a full five dedicated full-time defenders behind Enzo. For that to work, he needs to do more. Think back to Conor Gallagher who had largely the same role during that end run last season. The brilliance of Gallagher wasn't what he did on the ball, because he mostly didn't do much of anything. It was just that he ran, he ran with intensity, and he did so in both directions. And whenever Gallagher made a run around or into the box, someone had to follow. That created movement and thus the potential for errors. What we see with Enzo is that he doesn't make forward runs a lot, he doesn't hit the aggressive passes that Palmer and Sancho will do in a heartbeat, and he doesn't move with the same kind of intensity that Gallagher did. Bluntly speaking, he jogs and recycles. And that leaves our attackers a man down when trying to open a deep defense. Who supports Sancho wide left? Who supports Jackson in the box? Enzo doesn't. Yes, it is very nice to have that additional midfield guy when moving the ball forward but what do we do once we've gotten into the final third? Who are our actual chance creators in that situation? Who are our goalscoring threats? Reality is, Enzo should be one of them. But he isn't.

The way Enzo gets pulled apart by his own fan base is wild. I saw all of the criticism on X after the Forest game and having watched the match myself now, it's clear that most of this is just agendas and narrative. Most just see people say stuff online and follow the crowd without using their own eyes and brain to form an informed opinion. This video sadly illustrates it. He didn't give the ball away 'so much', this seems to be in reference to his 2 corners that hit the first man. Of course, this is poor, but Cole Palmer also hit the first man with his first corner. Enzo was absolutely fine against Forest, did very little wrong. Most games his only sin is not appeasing the G/A merchants. He isn't perfect but he's far from the problem everyone wants to paint out he is.

You are right Palmer as the 10 and Bellinham in a deeper midfield role next to Rice sound best to me that way you keep Saka in the team then Foden can be a very good backup for Palmer, or even Grealish on the left.

I think Enzo is a top class player. Not on his best form, but he has real quality. As a fan base we've gotten really bad for turning on a player, writing him off, and then say "haha whoops, he's actually pretty good" and not learning. Jackson and Cucurella are perfect examples.

Enzo is very good at what he's good at, but reality is that not every player is going to fit into what the team is doing. Enzo is essentially a younger Jorginho but he's playing like he's Jorgi's age and living badly. And the problem is that we cannot play with defensive fullbacks in a back four and also have two defensive'ish midfielders and still have enough people to open a reasonably good organized defense.

Yup, you got it, he is only on the field because the Board decided to pay stoopid 🤑 💰 for him. Mudryk would also be playing but he was only on 80m, the team was saved by getting J Sancho. Same goes with Fofana, they invested so much in him but honestly Tosin is better. If Fofana does not improve this season Tosin will take his spot. The problem with Enzo is that he has been given the captaincy in James' absence, so its like he is forced to start.

Maresca have it spot on with his first eleven. Our bench are loaded with super-subs who are managed well due to their injury history. Of course as the season goes on they all will start premier league games when players from the current first eleven drop off some form due to fatigue, injuries, etc.

I feel the reason why the Forest game went the way it went was the setup of the opposition and the approach was meant to block our engine room not to perform and perhaps that's why Enzo struggles. Also the Bournemouth game the opposition concentrates more breaking our flow. Thus the coach has to find a solution on how to set up to counter "cantecao" sort of football. 1) Not fully convinced w Jackson. He’s a good player but I need to see more as a starter. Think it’s only fair we give Nkunku a few PL games as a starter to see how it goes. Maybe that pressure pushes Jackson a bit more, who knows? 2) I need to see more from Enzo. When he first came he was doing a lot more of switching the play, more long ball attempts and splitting thru balls, I need him to control the pace a bit more and play faster and try more creative risk passing to take some load off Palmer. Otherwise just play lavia to help protect the back more if enzo doesn’t pick it up. 3) For England I have 3 formations: Safe: 4-2-3-1, Palmer in the 10, Saka RW, Bellingham in the pivot with Rice and choose whoever on the LW. Defensive: 3-4-2-1, Palmer and Bellingham our two 10s, Saka LM, Maino and rice holding Daring: 4-3-1-2: Rice Holds, Palmer in the 10, and Bellingham and Foden flanking rice. Saka as a second striker more off to the right half spaces.

4:00 The whole Cole Palmer vs Saka debate is weird to be as they don't play the same position. You might call it right wing or right midfield or right forward. But Cole plays in the right half space whereas Saka tends to hug the touchline and create the width (like Madueke at Chelsea). Without a winger or overlapping wing back, Palmer would be much less effective (as any player would in that position). Saka without someone (like Odegaard) inside of him to play off also becomes less effective. England is the perfect example of this at the Euros when Foden was left but would always want to play in the half space, but Trippier wasn't of the right (left) foot to provide the width outside of him. And then Foden would come in central and get in the way of Bellingham making both ineffective. Then Kane would drop deep too and there was no one offering a threat wide or in-behind.

I think the problem is Enzo needs a proper defensive midfielder next to him to play his best game and cover him too. Chelsea don’t have this type of midfielder and caicedo isn’t that type of player. It’s a midfield mismatch. A midfield 3 would also work with enzo, caicedo & a proper defensive midfielder to sit back and cover. But this would mean Chelsea would have to play a front 3 and would affect palmer. Chelsea have bought wrong 2 midfielders who can’t play together. It is poorly planned.

I'm really surprised that Fernandez isn't being used in the same role Maresca used Harry Winks in last year at Leicester. Playing him higher up the pitch isn't really working all that well in *most* cases. George mentioned that Fernandez always looks good at the international level. I won't pretend to be an expert on the Argentinian national team, but having watched nearly every Copa America match, the thing I noticed is that when he looked best, he was playing the deeper role rather than in an advanced 8/10 role. All of that being said... I concur. I **need** to see a Lavia-Caicedo midfield.

Enzo had the 3rd most key passes after Palmer and madueke, he won more ground duels than caicedo, having fewer touches compared to the rest of the squad and making and even had a better performance rating than the whole back line, including caicedo, and playing just 80mins. Cole Palmer had an amazing game from the position he played. Enzo may have dipped in form and recently he’s getting his sequence back, your agenda on him is not helping the fans see him differently.. And Henry saying he’s not had a better game since Liverpool last season shows how little he thinks of him.. Enzo was literally the 3rd best Chelsea player last season and second best Chelsea player in his first season for Chelsea based on performance rating. If pochetino didn’t invert cucurella last season, Chelsea would not have been dominant at latter stages of the season, it wasn’t caicedo, neither Gallagher, it was cucurella, they just benefited from it. The same way caicedo goes for the ball in Chelsea is the same way de Paul goes for the ball in Argentina while Enzo conducts the tempo and vision of the game, and many times outplaying the whole midfield 3 or 4 for Argentina.

I think what Enzo does gets largely unnoticed because it’s the linking assist before the assist, there was one game where he didn’t play (think servette) where we looked very disjointed in defense into attack and that’s Enzo’s job. I do agree I wish his final pass and shooting were better but I just don’t think he’s that type of player.

Analizing our game, I think that probably our problem is more related to Gusto-Fofana and the need of having a stronger player in the write side of the peach to allow cucurella invert. Comparing Enzo and Mac has no scence, you have to think that they are not player builded in england, the game in argentina is more likely the game in Spain, teams live for attack-deffend rather than transitions. Caicedo doesn’t suit Enzo. As good as Caicedo is, he doesn’t accommodate Enzo in possession, because he always passes back. Enzo could definitely improve on the defensive end though
