Maybe if your frequent the location you will tip the next time you order for the previous time. Those tips get distributed among all people working, not just our favorite person. And if there's an ass working, they get the tips too if we want to tip the nice person. Don't overthink it. Don't you people always preach against government programs to help the community, saying that that need should be covered by charities? Well, view the tip jar as a charity going to people you know and who you want to directly help out. Maybe if you weren't such an elitist you'd actually care about others that don't make as much as you.

Tipping is out of control. I’m at a point where I plan my day around not having to tip. Technically true, but if you stiff a server at a restaurant, they’ll have to pay taxes on 8% of your bill, so they’re losing money by serving you. For example, say you have a $100 bill and you don’t tip. $8 of income gets reported to the IRS. If their combined tax rate is 20%, they’re paying $1.60 out of their own pocket for the joy of serving a tightwad like you!

The prices would have to be at least 20% higher. If you think a server in CA should be tipped 20% on top of the $15.50/hr, then you would have to believe you should tip WAY more in states where they make $2/hr. If we're going to use the % system, then it needs to vary by state depending on the servers base pay. The percent system is ludacris anyways. It should be a more flat fee, like $2-3 per person at the table. It doesn't make sense that if I order a water, I pay zero % tip on that, but if I order a soda, I pay 20%. The server is doing the exact same thing to get water as the soda. If I order a $15 burger and fries or a $30 steak and potatos, the server isn't doing any more or less work, yet I'm supposed to tip double for the steak?

The employer reports a minimum tip of 8% on each bill (if paid in cash). So $4 on a $50 bill. $8 on a $100 bill. Etc. This problem would go away if the employer just got rid of tipping and paid a reasonable hourly wage. Then it wouldn’t matter what you ordered!

To be fair, working in a kitchen is really hard work, and having to deal with customers all day long is a nightmare. You could’ve applied for a kitchen/waiting job. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying house keeping isn’t hard. But think about working in a confined area with ovens, deep fryers, grill(s), and stoves constantly running while also trying to keep track of 10 different orders and having everything come out perfect. And for servers they have to put on a happy face dealing with people who can be complete assholes ,while running around and having to keep track of what goes where. Those jobs are really tough, I’ve worked both and I’ve also worked housekeeping/ cleaning jobs in the past. Anyways point is kitchen work is way more difficult than housekeeping in my opinion.

I’ve only met non-servers express this opinion. Personally, I tip 20% minimum because I know what goes into the job. I think everyone should have to work a service job in their life. Frankly, rarely is it the server’s fault (steak cooked wrong, etc.) and it’s crazy how often guests take that out on the server because they don’t understand the inner workings. In my country tipping is not a thing at all. In restaurant sometimes there is a service item (it's on the menu and it's mandatory) that you will pay for unlimited bread/breadsticks, usually is 1-2€ per person and it's a fixed amount that you know in advance sometimes even before entering the restaurant. This is not on places where there is no bread like pizza places or bars (but there sometimes the price is different if you sit or if you get it yourself). I think the best thing about our system is that you know how much you are going to spend without strange calculation... just look at the menu, add the price of anything you want to eat (tax included) and 1 or 2€ depending on the place (it could be 0€ even in restaurants with bread... for example in places where workers go to eat usually there is no "service" to pay, or in places where you get the tray with the food yourself). That's it. Really easy when you need to budget. Also people in the service will not ask you every 5 minutes if you need something else or if you are ok. They will leave you time to chat. And no, I don't think the tips system ensures a good job or good food. Here people are professional and receive an adequate salary. Also because if someone does not work well in a place, they will be invited to change jobs and if a place does not cook well and is not professional, people no longer go to eat there and the restaurant close. Finally sometimes you really want to tip... that's like a gift, nothing wrong with it, but it's not something that many people do and it's not expected. It's just a gift that you leave when you really had a great time for example on christmas (when everyone is not working but the restaurant people are) and you want the service people to really know that you are happy with the way they worked. Since there is no way in place to leave tips with a card (it's not common at all) you usually will give it with cash. I think I only tipped once in my life, it was covid time and I tipped the guy that delivered a pizza to my family... he said "but you already paid..." I said "yes, but that's your tip, thank you". To make you understand that even he did not believe it was possible to get a tip.

10% tip for a sit down restaurant where a server is taking care for you has been the historic tipping rate dating back more than 100 years. As the price of food has increased so has the amount earned by servers. Of course everyone wants to make more money so servers will tell you that 15% is the new standard or 17& is the new standard. You just have to be resolute and kindly say no. And tips are not required, if a server does a poor job they may get less than 10%, perhaps even 0.

The customer has the option of leaving a gratuity in the amount he/she decides on. Irrelevant what country it is. If one is not making adiquate wages, look for a better paying job. No one owes you a free lunch.

I have stopped going to some of the restaurants in my area because the prices are higher and combined with the tip being more as well since the bill is higher, I do not feel the experience is worth it. That being said, if I go to a restaurant I tip around 20 to 25%. I would rather just have the tip (wage) of the waiter built into the price of the meal.

You sound like a European. Yeah tipping in the US is crazy.
@loganerb3952
@loganerb3952 Жыл бұрын
@@michael7054mean it’s just another system with pros and cons. In the USA theoretically the food would be cheaper because they have less overhead and therefore won’t have to charge as much for the food to make a profit plus then servers who get cash tips also don’t have to pay taxes on that income. Also the idea that servers don’t make a living wage is also overblown because if a server in one hours time doesn’t get atleast the minimum wage amount (of a normal worker) in tips they the business is legally required to pay the minimum wage. It also entices servers to do a really good job as your performance is directly related to your income and some severs who are really good at their jobs make BANK… But at the same time their income is not stable and people don’t have to tip if they don’t want to so it does make being a sever nearly impossible as a full time job due to inconsistent pay alone
@bobprice9541
@bobprice9541 Жыл бұрын
@@loganerb3952it has more cons than pros. It isn't reasonable that customers pay the wages of restaurant employees. They should be paying their employees like any business. A tip should be a thank you for service above and beyond. Shame on restaurant owners for demanding that customers pay employee wages on top of high prices.
@loganerb3952
@loganerb3952 Жыл бұрын
@@bobprice9541 see again this is where you’re overblowing the “wage” argument. They legally are required to pay them the same minimum wage of another normal employee if their tips don’t cover up to that point. Plus they get a lot of cash tips meaning they don’t pay as many taxes and therefore will require less money to make ends meet because of that! And I mean I don’t necessarily think either is better or worse they are just different. I feel anyone who says differently just has a bias… The server doesn’t have to work there you know and most do it gladly for extra income because working one Friday night shift can net them several hundreds of dollars… Often times people make more on tips then just a straight wage so are server really that bad off because of this? Also if you’re really good at bartending or serving and you get a gig at some high end places you’re making easily 75+k a year just as a server from tips
@loganerb3952
@loganerb3952 Жыл бұрын
@@bobprice9541 Also the customer is always the one paying for the server and the business anyway because without the customer the business doesn’t run… so why should I care if I get a slight discount on my food price because their overhead is less and then I need to pay a little extra at the end for a tip 🤷‍♂️… this is just like people arguing over the metric system or which side of the road you drive on… at the end of the day you just have to pick a system and go with it… there’s really no win for either system other then the fact that some people grew up learning it one way and others did the opposite

The one exception is the two guys at the tire shop who stayed past closing to plug a tire (shameful I didn't do it myself I know) they each got a 20. We'll keep our money thanks. I went to Noodles & Company _(great place btw)_ last week and ordered some classic buttered noodles. I paid, and was prompted a tip menu. I pressed DECLINE The cashier _(we are the Midwest btw)_ did that type of silent scoff where your eyes go wide and you pull your head back a little in shock while frowning? You know the one. She then has the gall to go Oooooookay?? Like what am I tipping you for? Let's be realistic. Say I did the standard typical 20%. Hell let's make it 25%. For what? You pushed a single button on a screen with pictures on it for a bowl of buttered noodles. You didn't even ask me if I wanted a small or large, you just assumed _(correctly)_ that I wanted a large. You didn't even know I wanted a soda, I had to stop you and tell you to add that. Then let's say I pay the 20% - 25% tip. You're not the one cooking the noodles. You aren't the one buttering them. You're not even acting like a waitress in that you deliver the food to me or get me refills or ask if I want garlic bread. You pushed 2 buttons _(buttered noodles, soda)_ and pressed checkout. WHAT.... am I _ACTUALLY_ tipping you for? What service did you provide to me that not only warrants, but is even remotely WORTHY of a tip?? But hey, I guess I'm the asshole.

When did the norm become 20% at restaurants? Not too long ago, 10% was a decent tip. A 2008 Esquire magazine guide said 15% was still the norm. As tips are a percentage of the bill, when food prices go up, the tips go up at the same rate. So increasing the tip percentage is unwarranted. If 15% was good enough in the past, it should be good enough now. The base is 8%. That’s what the restaurant reports to the IRS on undocumented tips (cash). So, even for poor service, you probably shouldn’t go below 10%, since they typically have to tip out others.

I was asked (by the ipad) if I wanted to tip the AC technician who serviced my HVAC yesterday. Not only is the guy very much subject to minimum wage laws (unlike waiters at restaurants) but he lives two streets down from me and I know he makes *very* good money. Of course I selected the no tip option. His reward for good service is a repeat customer. I will tip at sit down restaurants, on the super rare occasion I order delivery, and at the barber. That's it. I don't go to bars or valet my car so meh.

Remember, when tipping using a % you should not tip on the tax. Also, isn’t tipping just a way to encourage employers to pay less than they should? I understand that’s historical for waitstaff, but other areas should not underpay and then expect customers to pay even more!

Matt Walsh gave my favorite advice. Three categories must be met for a tip to be required. + It's a low paying service job + They're providing a service you could not or don't want to provide yourself + Your experience is greatly improved or diminished based on the quality of their effort If ALL THREE of these are not met then do not tip!

This came from people who are bad at math. All I can figure is, people think, oh, prices are going up, so I should tip a higher percentage! Well if you always tipped 15% and the prices went up, your 15% tip will go up by the same amount! 15% on a $10 bill in the 70’s is $1.50. 15% on a $100 bill now is $15.00.

I just thought of something.. when coffee shop tills are counted out at night they have to record the extra money in the till. Thereis no way three people working at night are taking out that extra money and setting it aside for people who worked during the day as most transactions are completed thru cards now. Cash tips have a small chance of making it to the employees but maybe that doesn’t happen either.
