Fantastic! I saw your hook-lift and skip videos from your Poland trip and have been waiting for an RL upload all this time :P It's nice to see a rare proper video of European trucks, as a lot of the others on here are essentially shit to watch. Cool to see an NTM in action instead of the other makes which seem to be more common in videos. The first time I saw an NTM with the levers I was almost convulsing in shock, being so used to euro stuff being drowned in buttons and switches... what a nice change; still with the automatic option, but not entirely relied upon. Can't believe the guy on the first truck needed to run the packer dead man style the entire way though, nothing auto at all - buttons on the side don't do anything? Big contrast between the modern and old school look, just the ribbed body vs clean skin stands out by a mile, then you compare the open back on the old truck versus the more familiar enclosed tailgate/hopper design (where you can't see the packer working for shit). There appears to be little change in lifter design, spotted the lift cylinders are mounted slightly different, rest is quite similar. Noticed on the older truck at least that the lifter clamp is powered by springs instead of hydraulics, unless I didn't spot an actuator - couldn't tell how the clamp operates on the new truck. As for the trucks, I'll agree they don't sound overly great, but the older MAN let off an alright note when taking off, bit of a light grumble to it. Love the difference in settings too, got a tractor going past at 5:16 out in the country, then you've got the busy buzzing city seen well in the last clip - garbage collection causing a bit of chaos methinks haha Also very interesting about the monthly service schedule in the first location, not so generous when it comes to disposal capacity! What a way to decrease wastage, but I guess that doesn't stop backyard incinerating. Hmm I think I wanted to say more about the video, but this is all I have for now :S
@georgewuzheer
@georgewuzheer 7 жыл бұрын
Another skip video to come, after that all glorious rear load. And all pretty entertaining. The style of operation on the first truck may have had something to do with being assigned less work than needed to really fill the day, as we discussed on your photo of the Marrickville Garwood. This truck and crew weren't the usual ones, normally it's a 3 man affair! Apologies for not getting a better packer shot of the second truck, having spent all day looking for it I was too happy just to have found it and sort of did a poor job actually filming. I think both trucks have the usual clamp with spring setup. Like you said really very little has changed between the two. Yeah old habits die hard, just because backyard incineration has become illegal doesn't mean it has totally stopped happening ;)

They seem to have a lot of different bins, similar to my home county (although we have black bins with black or red lids), reused from municipalities who bought new bins. The one at 1:22 looks especially interesting

"As easy as lifting the bin onto the lifter!" It's always a treat to see any foreign method of waste collection. Does all trash there just end up at a dump or go to an incinerator? I know that incineration is widely used throughout Europe. Great post as always and the overall uniforms.... lol old school. It's like jumpsuits in the U.S.
@georgewuzheer
@georgewuzheer 7 жыл бұрын
As of filming in August most was still landfilled but ether September or October saw the opening of a brand new incinerator. There was a big push away from landfilling after joining the EU and having to comply with their standards. Yeah dig the overalls but they are really practical.

I come from Australia so forgive me if this seems ignorant but I always thought that garbage collectors riding on the back of a truck like this something that only happens in movies and things the trucks we have over here have mechanical claws that lift the bin and empty in the back so they driver doesn't even need to leave the cab
@laurin4339
@laurin4339 3 жыл бұрын
Rear loaders are still used in Europe because most streets are just to narrow for a side loader to work in, but in the country side, mostly in richer nations like Germany or Sweden, you will find similar side loaders like the ones you have in Australia collecting the trash. There aren‘t side loaders in Australia everywhere too, for example Sydneys eastern councils have streets that would be to narrow for a side loader so they still use rear loaders.

Excellent video George! Im glad to see your back to posting! Monthly collection is new to me! Where I live its pretty much all 90 gallons serviced weekly, but they are no where near as densely packed as these carts are. A very good design as far as the body goes! seems very well built! I have recently been going through your old WM of Naples footage lately! and was wondering if you still have footage left from back when you lived there? Outstanding work as always!
@georgewuzheer

Garbage industry productions Thanks! Should have many more videos up soon. Possibly including some old WM of Naples stuff. Here in Portland collection is fortnightly with a less frequent monthly option for those who make less trash, and the stuff in the those carts looks pretty similar.

Stellar. As much as I adore my McNeilus' and EZ Pack's I always find myself returning to this video of yours. NTM's seem to have a really nice design and look very sleek with the little 80 Litre bins. I've always liked the idea of bi-weekly collection, but monthly collection is a whole new ballpark. I can imagine how heavy those cans were filled with a whole months waste. The recycling dilemma looked like a less-than ideal work environment and some bad recycling. The newer truck looked a tad too European for my liking but I still found it to look sleek as well. I've never quite liked having those super small and high hoppers but I can see why they're good for this application. I very much liked the MAN chassis' on both trucks, as they gave me some midliner older vibes. I look forward to your next upload, as it will hopefully be something unique and professional as usual. Keep it up George.

I drive a recycling truck in Finland and NTM is by far my favorite brand of rear loader. It's powerful, practical and fast in use, and the controls are very easy to use even with thick gloves. But most of all, it's very reliable in our climate, where temperatures usually range from -30 to +30 degrees C (-22 to 86 degrees F) and rain, snow and ice are common. Geesink Norba and Joab rear loaders are widely used here, too. But they have a lot more computers, automation and sensors throughout the machine, and in my experience, they can be unreliable in varying weather conditions. Our current truck is a 3-axle Mercedes Econic 2635 with a Geesink Norba loader. It usually needs a couple of restarts every day in order to reset the computer. If it gets erroneous data from even one safety related sensor, the whole loader stops working, even when there's actually nothing wrong with the system... 🤬

This rear loader is really neat. Nothing but practical. I like it a lot. But what the heck is with the wheelie bins like the one at 5:10, on the left?! Its like the size of my kitchen can! Super tiny, by far the smallest ive seen. Any idea what the capacity might be? Lol they look so dumb. Haha reminds me of a funnel. Recycling looks pretty heavy too, which is awesome. Great video!

Don't know for sure but probably 80L so 20 gallons. At work I pick up customers who use the same sized bin for monthly service too, so it's possible. But those are either little manual bins or 35 gallon carts with a plastic insert. These funnel looking things like to trap trash. Thanks!
@georgewuzheer
@georgewuzheer 7 жыл бұрын
In a lot of places but I was blown away by how little garbage some Portlanders make. In any case compared to most places US consumers have more choice of crap to consume, more disposable income to do it with, and far cheaper methods of disposal. We're bound to make more trash.

how the bin litfter work?
@eier5472
@eier5472 3 жыл бұрын
The bins have a ledge on top below the lid, the lifter has a comb which anchors the bins in place. When it's lifted, a small ledge presses from above holding the bins in place. The details are in the En 840-1 directive, it's standardized in the EU and very common outside America

Nice work George! great to see an upload from ya again! First truck is beast would be cool if a company had one here in pdx, and the second truck most of the bins (the yellow ones) looked like they were originally blue but got spray painted
@georgewuzheer
@georgewuzheer 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon. I think especially the first truck channels the same vibe as the Lehl and Weitzel Alphas. 20yd bodies for both residential and commercial on cabovers. If you use one of those kick bar mounted cart tippers they're even more similar. The bins def aren't painted, they're actually slightly translucent in the bright sun.

With all the second hand imports in Poland I found Norbas, native WUKOs, the now ubiquitous Eko-Cel/Brivio/Zoeller packers, and some retired Paris trucks in their original colors. Oh and a Meiller skip loader. A nice cross section of European equipment all within 20 minutes of Krakow.
