She used a regular 5-string banjo that was designed for righthanders. Instead of using her thumb on the fifth string, she picked it with her index finger and used her thumb and other fingers on the higher strings. Same with guitar, as elsewhere mentioned, it is called "Cotten picking".

She was left handed but grew up in a house where her brothers and father who were right hand had the banjo and the guitar pretty much until she could work and earn one herself. So she learned on their right-handed banjos, she played a guitar with a right handed set u guitar too even though when she was first working on her own she got her mother to buy her a guitar. So it is often interesting to figure out her stroke as she often does stuff a bit counter to what a left handed person on a left hand instrument or a right handed person would do
