I've been on a richard manuel kick tonight... (and a The Band kick for a while..) but it does make me feel many emotions when you think of his voice still being around, or even a bit longer then it was. Richard Manuel is an all time great singer and just great listening to. Lovely

What would become one of the most famous pictures, Richard sitting at his piano grasping his mic with his eyes closed, was left out of the most famous concert films. Why? This is Richard doing what he did best, and the only way to view it is a black and white video on KZbin. Such a shame.

Amazing feeling I every time I hear it. That sweet and softly spoken lyrics by Richard and that screeching guitar from Robbie. It's sad how it all ended but I love them each equally. They played a huge part in my childhood in Ireland in the 80's, all thanks to my Dad

I too have been on a The Band kick. I have loved The Band since I first heard "Up on cripple Creek", when I was in my twenties and living in New York City. I had almost finished Robbie Robertson's book Testimony, when I heard he passed away. Since then I have been listening to many of their songs again, especially the one from "The Last Waltz", I like RIchard's voice, but my favorite is Rick Danko, especially his emotional and soulful "It makes no difference". Robbie was a great song writer and guitar player, but did not have a voice like Rick, Levon or Richard.

He committed suicide(by hanging) after a show in Winterpark Florida. March 4th 1986. It was Grand Marnier that he drank so much of. Anyway, he had been in Levons room up until 2am that morning talking and he went back to his own room. He snuggled in with his wife and when she woke up the next morning he was gone, she thought he was passed out on the your bus and went and got breakfast. When she returned to the room and went into the bathroom she found him hanging from the shower rod. He had struggled with alcoholism and heroin for a long time but had got clean in the every late 70's. He began drinking and using again when The Band went back out on the road, minus Robbie Robertson. He had been very depressed that they weren't even selling out bars anymore when they used to sell out arenas. I mean, they headlined at wood stock for Petes sakes. Anyway, that's what happened. I hope I answered everything :)

Apes Fergs I visited the Cheek to Cheek lounge in Winter Park on a family trip back in the 90’s; this was the venue that they played the night of Richard’s suicide. The place wasn’t quite a sh*thole, but it was far from their glory days. The Quality Inn where he killed himself is right next door. The staff claimed not to have a clue that he had killed himself there. I haven’t been to Stratford to pay my respects at his gravesite; my wife and I were in Toronto a couple summers ago and drove within 30 miles on the way home, but I was sick and just wanted to get home.
